I have been doing pretty well after my hydrodistention yesterday, but now I am definitely holding water. I have drank a lot today, but I have barely peed anything at all (and was straining just to get any out). I feel constant pressure like I need to go,and my sides hurt. It is hard to walk because it is just jolting me and making me feel like I really need to pee. Is there any way to get things moving along? My doctor's office is already closed for the day, so I don't know who to really get advice from. I am hoping one of you can point me in the right direction...if I don't pee soon I am gonna go nuts!

Hi
I experienced the same after my hydro.
I was taking in a lot of water b/c the anesthesia makes me VERY thirsty. BUT little to none was coming out, starting the evening of my hydro.
This urinary retention issue should not be taken lightly!!!! as it can cause serious pain, possibly the pain that you are experiencing now, and can progress to some very serious problems and even more serious pain.
Please please call your dr's office NOW, the answering service will page your dr and your dr will call you back ASAP...and if not, get to the ER...sounds like you need to be cathed, possibly put on foley cath (cath and leg bag) or if you know how to self cath that may be an option, too, tho sometimes a few days on cath and leg bag is necessary and often the best option. You can avoid things progressing from bad to worse by getting in touch w/ your dr via the answering service or by going to the ER. I promise you, doing so will be well worth it.
Urinary retention such as this is a medical emergency and should be treated as such!!!

Thank you!! I have called my doctor now and the nurse is going to get in touch with him. I hope that I don't have to go back to the hospital..argh!

I agree that you should call your doctor's office. You should get an answering service and some advice. If you can't reach your doctor, please go to ER if you are not able to urinate. And very important --- don't strain --- it will only make it worse.

Well, they called back and said that the doctor said that if I was in pain, I could go to the ER. He also said it would be okay to take a water pill. DH has some that are his that he offered me, but they are prescription, so I don't want to take those. I asked him to get me some OTC ones....he is about to go out to run some errands anyways. If the pain gets to where it is really bad, I will go to the ER. Right now, it is just uncomfortable and preventing me from getting anything done as far as being able to move around. Hopefully the water pill will work, because catheters are like the worst pain for me...like fly off the table painful. I just can't imagine where all this fluid could be going since I basically have a bladder the size of a pea.

I hope the doctor calls you very soon. If not, go to a walk in clinic or the ER.

I could tell you where all the fluid is going but that is not important! What is important is that you get the fluid OUT of you...and that I am sorry means by cath of some sort! I am not experienced with water pills...but after hydro it is not that uncommon for urethra and bladder to go into spasms and cause retention issues...I don't know that a water pill would be of any help with that??
Believe me, cath of some sort is much preferable to the pain of retention. When I need to be cathed, I always ask for the absolute SMALLEST cath available (12 fr or less, preferably 8fr or a pediatric cath or even a pediatric feeding tube). Non latex is also much less irritating, so I always try to get that, too.
Yes, keep an eye on the pain, but also keep an eye on how much fluids you are taking in and how much, if any, you are putting out. Also, keep close watch on the size of your belly...if you are having pain and belly is looking swollen, that is is a sure sign of urinary retention and you will need to be cathed. If you go to ER, call on the way to prep them to get the smallest cath possible, preferably non latex, ready and waiting for you. I have been there and have lived and learned!!
Keep us posted if you can...

Thank you. If the water pill does not work, I will suck it up and go to the ER, I promise! My stomach does feel swollen, my DH is trying to hurry home...he should be getting the pills right about now. I definitely will ask for the smallest catheter available if it does end up that I have to go to the hospital. I really appreciate your advice and concern. This is definitely a new one for me...not being able to pee.

Yep, it was a new one to me, too!
I had not had retention issues at all til the hydro...I am glad you posted about your problems so that hopefully any of the responses you have gotten will be of help to you. I did not post:bonk::bonk: when I started having bad problems so did not get the suggestions you have received...if only I had, it would have probably prevented things from going from bad to worse to serious.
So yes, if it comes to cathing: call ahead, demand smallest cath possible, non latex if possible, and also to have cath coated with lidocaine before inserting. Also helps to have some lido squirted into the urethra a few minutes prior to cathing.
Please remember that you and your husband are your own best advocates, and that if you don't ask/demand these things you will probably not receive. Retention makes things swell up and can make cathing even more intolerable...so you and your husband both need to be aware of the things that can make cathing in this situation most tolerable for you and do NOT be afraid to ask for what you need...:)

It sounds like you need a cath, fast before bigger complications arise. Flomax helped me a lot with retention issues but your situation sounds acute and flomax is more for maintainence. Once this episode is managed try talking to your doctor about flomax? He may have a better idea of course. Get help anyway you can meanwhile. Good luck!

Well I am at the hospital now...posting from my phone. Waiting on a doc to come see me. It is taking a while. DH is getting ill because he has some thing about hating hospitals. I peed some since I have been here probably due to the two water pills I took. I will update later if a doc ever comes to see me.

I also had the feeling I just had to void after my HYDRO just out of the operation. The nurse tried to help me with a bed pan. Not possible for me. I told her I must use the toilet. She said that was not possible. Well it is my body and I had to go so I told her either walk with me and help hold the I.V. or I would just do it myself. I was serious as a heart attack and would not take NO for an answer. I went to the bathroom with her help and was able to empty my bladder. It's a terrible feeling. If they need to cath you let them do it and ask for a child size cath. Many people are intimidated by Doctors & hospitals. I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. Please do keep us posted. We are so different as you know. For myself the HYDRO helped me greatly. I hope you get pass this and feel much better SOON. Hugs, Ziggy

I hope by now you have either been able to urinate or have been catheterized.

Thank you everyone for your support! They did a urine test and a blood test. I luckily did not have to get a catheter! I was actually starting to be able to pee more after being at the hospital for about an hour, probably due to the water pills finally kicking in. The doctor said my kidneys were functioning normally, but there was some bacteria in my urine. He knew though that with IC it is normal to have bacteria. He said that sometimes the anesthesia can cause people to become constipated (both urine and bowels). He did prescribe an antibiotic and said that if I still wasn't feeling better today, I should go get it filled. I have been able to go to the bathroom now though, and the side pain went away. I took a pain pill last night and pretty much slept all last night and late in to today. I am ready now to rejoin the living! LOL! It was good just to know everything was okay and I wasn't going to need a kidney or something terrible.
