Did you know that antidepressants can help with pain? Our doctor explained that they interfere with the pain receptors in the nerve system. My suggestion would be to give them a try.

Miss Glass - please try to hang in there. Unfortunately there are no quick and easy solutions to this thing called IC, but from what I've seen, once you're on track with your diagnosis and treatments things will get a lot better. It just might take some time.
jenjen gave some excellent advice in your other thread re. your boyfriend. Mine wasn't entirely understanding either until he began to realize what IC was like - if you can't get a book to him just yet, why not send him some online articles? Patient testimonials? When I found this forum I was surprised so see how many others were echoing the same painful sentiments I was. The same would apply to your family.
I would also highly recommend the IC diet. Seriously. I've seen such improvement within days, and things just continued to get better. Its something that you can do on your own, no doctors neccessary, while you continue to try and find the right doctor for you.
Anyhow, hang in there! Better days will come, many of us can vouch for that.
Hugs.

Oh, I was given antidepressants as well... I just filled that script and made my way over to yet another doctor who would actually give me a referral to a urologist :).
Keep trying, you will find the right doctor for you.

I wish there was something I could tell you to make things better but I can pray for you. Have faith that things will work out for you.

According to my urologist, yes. I was diagnosed through exclusion, and when I asked about something more definitive (e.g. cysto/hydro or potassium sensitivity), his reply was something along the lines of those tests being wrong half the time, but "the patient still has IC and we need to treat it." "If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, chances are its a duck".
Now, I don't quite believe in the 50% stat he's quoting, but after years of being misdiagnosed and being put on antibiotics with negative urine/ blood tests, I see what he's saying about the duck :)

I was diagnosed by hydrodistention back in 1975 and it definitely helped me feel better for many months. I've now had over forty hydros --- when my symptoms return, we schedule another hydrodistention. My last one was just over a year ago and it's still working for me.

The cysto/hydro being "clear" can sometimes say more about your doctor than your body.
My doctor said that I did not have IC (and set off a very unpleasant family war, when they no longer believed me after he said that). * BUT the operating room nurse who saw the screen said that I did have IC. And several doctors who saw the photos later said, "yes, it's IC." This is why I now really encourage patients who have cysto/hydros to make sure their doctor will take photos & give them to the patient afterwards.
*My mom developed IC about a year & a half after I did & that same doctor misdiagnosed her as well. The staff in that office wasn't super-competent either. A nurse actually said that her prostate looked fine in a scan she had done. When my mom pointed out she didn't have a prostate, that she's a woman, they put her on hold... Didn't take long for her to start looking for a new doctor.

Print off or buy a book explaining this disease like I mentioned in your previous thread. Give it to your boyfriend and family. If they still don't get it or want to get it... please tell them to take a long walk off a steep cliff.
Try the antidepressants. As you read around on this forum more, you will see that they help a lot of us IC people. Particularly Elavil. Ask for that one. See if it makes you any better.
I know your doctor is being a big meanie, but please don't rule out anything he tells you. He will be less likely to want to help you if you outright refuse any treatment he offers. Do what I do, take the script for whatever he gives you, go home and do research on the drug, ask questions in the right category on this website, and then determine whether or not you want to go get the script filled. I do that all the time. Nothing wrong with being an informed patient and consumer.
