View Full Version : Eliminating soda & coffee
Eliminating soda & coffee and only drinking milk & water made me worst. I'm having to pee alot during the night. And I only pee an ounce at a time. Does anyone know why that is? It's made worst after eliminating major triggers in my diet. I drink about one 20 Oz bottle of Sam's Choice Purified Drinking Water from Walmart stores. I drink just a little milk in cereal. So, what am I doing wrong? Any advice?

Hi Tmog,
You might want to try eliminating the milk for a while, try with just water and see how that goes.
I've been recently diagnosed (two weeks ago) myself, and last week I tried to take Elmiron with some milk. I was peeing all night long! I'm still not 100% sure that milk was the culprit, but I'm staying clear of it until things settle and I'm ready to start experimenting with things that are potentially more troublesome for me.
ps. I've seen some ic'ers also complain of certain type of waters being problematic for them too. Its a game of elimination/ trial and error with this stuff I guess...

Welcome, Lonely sole (not so lonely any more I hope!), just fyi...you might check with your doc about drinking milk with Elmiron. Milk may qualify as food, and Elmiron is best taken with water on an empty stomach.
If you are taking it with milk because you have gastro-intestinal side effects, also talk to your doc. You may be reacting to the capsule itself and not the drug. Good luck with Elmiron. I have been taking it for six months and it's helping me big time.
Do you think I need to increase my water intake to what's recommended? How much should a 175 lbs male drink daily? Maybe, it's concentrated urine making it worst?

It took me a little while to find a healthy balance so my urine was really diluted but I wasn't overdoing it and getting bloated or making my bladder work too hard.

We need to drink six to eight cups of water daily. I usually only do six. You will want to read the label if you're buying water to be sure it doesn't have additives. If I'm buying water to drink, I just make sure it's spring water with no additives.

The label says potassium however, doesn't give an amount.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks milk makes the pee more. I drink water a lot during the day. But I keep some water by my bed. It never fails I always wake up thirsty.:toilet:

Do you think milk could be the problem for most people? I thought it was on the safe IC food list.

You can easily find out if milk is a problem --- just eliminate it from your diet for a week.

I thought it was safe for IC. I drink skim milk. I don't think they now everything about IC yet. Do you have a problem with people trying to understand IC? When I was diagnosed with IC my family DR had no idea what it was. ( Surprise BIG TIME) Do you have anybody in your family with IC? My Mother has it and I have a cousin who has it.:toilet:

There are some people, not necessarily with interstitial cystitis, who are lactose intolerant, which means their bodies don't like milk products. It's not an IC trigger food for most, but for someone who has IC and is also lactose intolerant, it could be a problem. We use 2% at our house --- it's a compromise with my hubby. :)
There is nobody in my family that I know of who has IC --- nobody in my immediate family or among aunts and uncles. There are some cousins I haven't seen for many years, but have never heard any of them have IC.
Donna
My mother has IC also. My grandmother may have had episodes of mild IC though not continuously like me & my mom.
My mom's cousin may have mild IC, but hard to know because she has other bladder issues.

As far as I know, I don't have any family members who have IC.

Goldfinch - thank you for the warm welcome. I guess I should introduce myself in a separate thread, but boy am I glad I found you guys! :)
Yes, that thought did occur to me, and I only did it that once. I tend to do the Elmiron on an empty stomach with a full glass of water as you suggested.
I'm glad to hear that the Elmiron helped you a lot - I've been on it for a few weeks now, and while I have seen improvement (a lot in part due to the IC Diet which I have to thank the wonderful members of this forum for as well), I get very discouraged from time to time.
How long in did it take for you to say the Elmiron was helping?

Hi, Elmiron started work in about five months for me. Some said it only took three. The diet I found was so hard for me. But my husband keeps an eye on me. I call him THE FOOD NAZI.:cussing:

Anything is worth a try. If you are sure that nothing else you are eating or drinking is bothering you, drop the milk and see. I think you have to have a happy medium with the water. It has to be enough to keep your urine nice and light, but not two gallons a day. I think that would just make you pee alot. I find if I drink alot of water, it helps me to pee less. I have heard others say that too. Also, maybe your water is causing your problem. Some of the waters in the store have low PH which means they are acidic. I tried the one mentioned on the food list and saw an immediate improvement. But we are all different. That's what makes this so confusing.

I suggest you try plain spring water with "NO ADDITIVES" --- it's less apt to cause a problem.

Most people fully beneift from Elmiron in 3-6 months, others in as soon as four weeks. The reason it takes so long to work is because it takes awhile to build up in your lbadder because most of the medicine is lost in your digestion system.

My doctor has me taking Elmiron three times a day. And I have to take Singular at bed time for the asthma. I had Endometriosis and had to have a total hysterectomy in 1997. It was to bad that it had spread to my bladder. Ah the pain from that was bad. I was not diagnosed with IC until 2005. I think it goes hand and hand. So how dose your spouse deal with your IC?:bonk:

How long have you been taking Elmiron and is it working for you? I thought, Elmiron is suppose to cure & heal the bladder? If it's not then why are you still taking it?

I've been taking it ever since 2005. My URO wants me to keep taking it. I don't think there is anything else on the market for IC. Also I'm afraid to stop it and that the IC would get worse than it is. I do have good months with out alot of pain.:bonk:

six to eight cups? How many ounces is that? Are we talking about 8 OZ?
Or just basic cup measurements?

1 liquid cup = 8 oz.

Hi Lonely Soul!!
One thing that actually worked for me was not only to increase my water (I drink the filtered water from my refrigerator), but I also drink a large glass of water before I go to bed. I know that sounds counter intuitive, but what happens is that I get up in about an hour to void....and then I am set for the rest of the night.
The reason I tried this was that it felt like my urine was getting more concentrated at night which caused the multiple trips to the bathroom. I can't be sure, but I think the big glass of water dilutes it urine enough that it doesn't bother me.
I know this won't work for everyone, but it may be something to try.
Hang in there.....you have people that understand now!

Hi Julie - I actually figured that out a few weeks ago and started doing the exactly that, but with a slight twist. My filtered water from the fridge also has a bit of baking soda in it - I kind of figured my bladder didn't like what it was holding on those rare nights I was able to sleep a few hours and woke up after to go. Fun times!
Thanks for the welcome :)
