I'm not sure I'm posting in the right place here, but after I thought about it for awhile I thought someone here might have an opinion on this. :help:
Over two years ago my urologist at that time told me I was retaining. I had a dilatation done and a biopsy. I was having some very cloudy urine at that time and he said it was from the retention. My urine did clear up after that, but it certainly did nothing for my burning and other IC symptoms. I'm sure that I have PFD, and have thought about seeing a PT for it. I'm sure I've read that doing kegels is not recommended for IC patients. However, I've noticed that after I think I'm done urinating if I do one kegel I can always pass more urine. I'm confused about this and was wondering if anyone thinks this is because I'm retaining again? I am on a low dose of Elavil (10mg) and I do know some say that it causes retention, but at such a low dose? Anyone have any comments or suggestions?

I have also read that kegels are not recommended for IC patients. One thing that can help empty is to stand up part way, then sit back down after you urinate --- some find that helps empty the last little bit.

Thanks Donna, I was sure I had read this. It does seem to be only a small amount, and I will try your suggestion.

I do Kegels religiously in order to keep the pelvic floor strong. Like you, I too find it helps me to fully empty.
I say whatever works for ya.

You say when you tighten your kegels and then release them (you find you have a bit more release of urine)...
So, what you are doing is contracting the muscle and then relaxing it, allowing for the bladder to release more urine when you relax.....so, I am thinking that when you are urinating you are somewhat still holding a slight contraction in the pelvic floor not allowing the bladder to fully empty...SO when you have been doing a quick kegel and release you get more urine because you have fully relaxed at the end of that kegel contraction.
So if you can learn to just fully release through your peeing you should be able to fully empty bladder.
MY Pelvic Floor THerapist told me to squat in the shower and have a good pee, then you will allow the pelvic floor to release and you can feel the pelvic floor muslces drop and release and the bladder will empty fully. THEN you can begin to use this technique on the toilet without having to squat.
Sometimes we do not even realize the tension we hold in our pelvis, it takes a lot of body awareness to connect to the movement.
HOpe this helps.
