View Full Version : 5 hour power drinks?

Has anyone used 5 hour power drinks to help with their fatigue? I am sure tempted to give it a shot. I can not get my house clean or enjoy my family because by 3 P.M. I am wasted big time. It is making me flustered and about ready to try anything! I don't want to go back to square one (10 in pain) but so far my Doctors are just telling me to live with it. Maybe just trying it once a week I could defeat the dust bunnies making war upon me. My IC is being kind to me right now. I am grateful but my quality of life feels very much less then it was when I felt my home was as clean as I wished. I really feel like I have run five miles uphill right now. I have done very little this day. What the heck is this all about? Thanks for letting me vent and please let me know if this stuff has caused a flare should you have tried it. Hugs, Ziggy

The best advice I can think of is to read the label. I sincerely doubt they would be good for your IC. You might ask your doctor about your fatigue --- it's how I reacted to a severe potassium deficiency. There are other things that can cause fatigue as well. Please don't just "live with it" --- check it out.

I am thinking any power drink would have caffiene in it and lots of sugar in order to give you "a KICK" into overdrive for added energy. I would avoid that totally. I mean read the label but I am sure you will find a ton of "not so good" ingredients in the power drinks.
Why can't you try and find natural healthy good alternatives to give you your power kick of energy. Legumes, nuts, a healthy smoothy made with blueberries and yogurt (if you can take yogurt)...etc...
I know I have been able to find some great natrual product granola bars I am able to tolerate...couple that with a tall glass of almond milk (or real milk if you drink it and can tolerate it)....so, maybe you could check those options out too! As that snack gives me all the energy I need, instead of sugar caffiene override power drink which will only leave you more lethargic when you come down off it...and then you may also flare from it...etc..

OH and do not be so hard on yourself about your dust bunnies....my dust bunnies have turned into dust eleplants....I use to be always trying to clean the house and do the housework and "do it all"....and since IC I have learned the one thing I have to do is pace myself and not be so judgemental. Do what you can do...always place your family first, the housework can come later....and if you feel lethargic, try placing cold cucumbers on the eyes and lay down a bit....take some deep breaths for about five minutes and meditate some positive quiet thoughts....the cold cucumbers on the eyes will rejuvinate the eyes and your deep breathing will bring more oxygen to the brain and give you the energy you need naturally.
PLUS a nice forward bend (or downward dog) (YOGA), will bring a rush of fresh blood to the brain, invigorating you and giving you a rush of energy. I know I teach yoga and when my clients come in and they are tired and needing a bit of revving....a few postures where the head is below the heart will get the blood flowing in the opposite direction giving the brain a fresh supply of blood, causing you the natural energy your body craves....
Hope this helps....(another alternative other then food!) :)
Peace

I have to say that I've consumed these drinks before and right after my IC was diagnosed. I didn't know any better, but I wish I had. They contain concentrated caffiene and tons of sugar and can reak havoc on an irritated IC bladder. I still now sady grab one on occasion not thinking and it always does me in.
As for the dust bunnies - I'm trying to live with that too. I woudln't say I'm fatigued all the time, but I can't seem to stand for more than 5-6 minutes without being in pain. I'm trying to decide whether or not to hire a cleaning lady and fork over money that I really don't need to spend in an effort to make my house clean. I have mostly tile floors in my house that seriously need to be mopped and I think the only way that'll get done is if I hire someone to do it for me. So dont feel alone - there are others in the boat with you. We just have to do what's best for us and our families. And if that means the house stays a little messy and things aren't in tip top shape, that's just something we'll have to get used to as it's in the best interest of all involved.
I know it's easier said than done since I'm working on it myself, but all we can do is try.
I used to hammer 5-hour energy drinks for those long late night drives but I can't since I started having problems with IC. The last time I drank one it stirred up some horrible pain.
I suppose you could drink a glass of water with each dose to dilute it.
