I'm wondering if there is a better position to sleep in that has less affect on the bladder & IC?
Would laying on the back with legs bent? Lying on your side or stomach be best? What has others found works best for them in this situation?

I can't speak for everyone obviously but I have always had a hard time falling asleep on my back, even before IC.

And since I have had IC I have TRIED sleeping on my back thinking that would be best for me but when I do try that I am much more aware of bladder pressure and that causes more nocturia for me.

I have always even pre-IC slept best on my stomach, but since IC the position I sleep best in is on my stomach with my hands in fists placed under hip bone to keep my belly somewhat elevated above and not coming into full contact with the mattress.

Well, that is what works best for me.;)

I can relate to your statement. I cannot sleep on my back ever! I've tried and found I have sleep paralysis episodes when I'm falling asleep on my back. That is always frightful for anyone who knows what I'm talking about!

I'm only able to sleep on my side/stomach mostly.

this might sound weird but has helped me in the past when my bladder was acting up. go on your side. say if you turn on your left side, lift your left leg up bent and leave your right leg straight. that helped me fall asleep and then once i fell asleep i was ok to move around. i could only do the back thing with your legs bent for a little while.

Now I am just the opposite. I have to sleep on my back. I feel more bladder pressure on my sides than my back. We have also had a Dr. tell us that sleeping on the back is the best position for your spine.

I go to sleep at night and if I don't have a bad night I barely move.

Hi dyno
How are you? I wished I could be like your in that regards. It would help my suffering. I'm up & down all night long! Sometimes, it takes 4 hours of tossing, turning & back-n-forth to the john before I fall asleep. I'm tortured! God hates me! All I can do is pray... Going to bed now...

I'm a side sleeper. I do turn from side to side several times during the night.

Hi Donna,

I'm a side sleeper too. I go from side-to-side sometime during the night.

I'm up again

I'm a side sleeper too, but some nights, like last night (sigh), my crotch and legs get really achey from radiating pain (I ate something I shouldn't have!). The only way I was able to get to sleep was, as lorenab suggested, was to lie on my side with one leg straight and the other bent up. That seemed to even out the pressure on my bladder and my legs. It worked for at least four hours . . .

When my symptoms first came on, the only way I could have relief enough to sleep was on my left side with a pillow at my side for my right arm to drape over and a pillow between my legs. This seemed to relieve the pressure I felt in my bladder. Now, I usually fall asleep on my right side. I still feel pressure in my bladder when on my back.
