Has anyone had any luck with oatmeal? I absolutely adore it but am nervous to try it again - I ate the flavored kind before that caused huge flare ups (I think it was mostly b/c of the sulphites they put in the dehydrated fruit but am unsure). I would love to start eating this for breakfast, as currently it's only rice krispies (a generic variety of them, the actual brand name ones don't work for me)
Is there any difference between steel cut and instant oatmeals?

Steel cut is a rougher cut and requires a longer cooking time. I love it and I don't think it has caused me any problems. I use a little brown sugar and milk when I eat it. If you live near a trader joe's they have the best price, until recently I couldn't find steel cut anywhere else and when you do, it is almost always more expensive for the same brand. Some don't like the texture of steel cut but it is better for you and I hate the texture of the rolled oats. Beware though, never buy the quick cooking steel cut unless you like the texture of eating raw grits- yuck!!! They never sofen at all. Good luck to you.

I personally don't care for steel cut, but it's the same as oatmeal.

I found an organic instant oatmeal with no preservatives at Whole Foods. I drizzle pure maple syrup on it, yum.

Hi there I have steel cut oats daily. Do not buy oats that are flavoured, you need to buy the natural organic steel cut oats.

I love steel cut oats. And yes, they do take a while to cook--maybe half an hour start to finish on top of the stove. They have a bite to them that rolled oats just don't have.
At large well-stocked stores you can buy steel cut oats in bulk, and that's the cheapest way to go. For a splurge you can buy Irish or Scottish steel cut oats in a can. My favorite is Hamlyn's Pinhead Oats in the plaid can!

Thanks ladies, I have tried it for texture when feeding my hubby or my 15 month old, I don't mind the texture, I just worry about flaring up if I ate any of it - the flavored oatmeal (Quaker for example) caused me a whole lot of grief, so I was hoping this may be a better solution...
I'm in Canada so no Trader Joe here! haha...but we do have some really good organic selections at our supermarkets up here, I should give them a whirl!
