my goodness, but grocery shopping is hard to do now. I read the labels and have to put the product down. I have forgotten how much I depended on canned soups for my slow cooker recipes. Well that is over, I told my hubby I guess I will have to start cooking from scratch all over again. I know it will be a healthier lifestyle but it was discouraging. I told my hubby "lets get out of here" and he smiled & said "getting too discouraging?" That was a total "yes" on my part.:mad: Oh well I do make a great cream of mushroom soup. :smile tee:smile tee

Yikes, even some of the whole cream and half and half products :rolleyes: had soy in them. I've tried stuff with soy on empty stomach and yes it brothered me. Then there is MSG, BHT, and the list goes on. All this makes me laugh as well as frustrates me. I've not eaten any soy products for 5 days and already have noticed a difference. So buying a can of soup to make a favorite recipe is NOT that tempting.

I went through my recipes and threw many out, saved a few in case the day ever comes that I can cheat a little. Went through my cabinets and refrigerator and boxed up 4 boxes of food. We tend to buy ahead while prices were low, so most of what I got rid of I could at least give to a food bank. Lots of dried soups, canned soups, and soy products, soy sauce, etc.

I get excited when I find a food I can eat. like almond butter. yes! I love peanut butter, but now it is almond for me all the way. :woohoo:

Yeah, you'll be reading labels for most of the shopping trip for a while. I'm there, too. I didn't know vinegar was a main ingredient in riccotta cheese! Sheesh.

At least you know some good from scratch recipes. I can't imagine how it would be for someone who didn't learn to cook before IC.

Bread without soy (and some other forbidden stuff) is really hard to find and there's no bakery on our island, so I'm baking my own.

I used to like liverwurst which is over, but I'm buying chicken livers and making good old chopped liver (with mushrooms).

Good luck!

why would you add soy to so many products, it is not a additive.
I am beginning to want to try some of those salad dressing ideas I have read on the diet thread as well as the ICN cookbook. I miss that, think I can live well with out them but miss something on a salad.

Wish there were more IC cookbooks out there, I may have to write my own just using the recipes I can twick or I have already that have ingredients I can use. I used to eat yogurt by the gallons, which means we have more $$$ left over from a shopping trip.

Oooh, I miss yogurt. And bananas with peanut butter.

Oh, yeah. I didn't read the label, but when I needed some comfort food at the beginning of this, I had a Rice Dreams ice cream bar with carob coating. I liked it very much!

I love peanut butter, walnuts and macadamian nuts as well. I almost did a jig in the store when I found almond butter. Made myself a sandwich of almond butter and honey. I did miss the jam, but honey was great. It is starting to seem humorous to me how the little things I find I can eat is cause for celebration. I did try my sourdough bread and that didn't seem to bother me, I put wheat germ and flax in it as well, it's is a healthy bread with no additives. :) See I am grinning now.

One day at a time.

I don't know if people know, but Jill, Barbara Gordon from ICA, Bev Laumann, and Barbara Shorter (a diet researcher), and I have been working on tweaking the IC diet. Things like peanut butter and yogurt are being moved up a notch. I think people will be pleased with how this is turning out!

Stay tuned!

I agree that my grocery shopping experience is very different these days!

But, it is SO VERY IMPORTANT to READ EVERY LABEL!!! It has been very enlightening for me as well to find that many of the regular "pantry items" that I used for many years are now very dangerous to my poor battered-bladder!!

Also, food manufacturers have some very clever ways of using additives and preservatives in food that can really cause ICer's a LOT of serious problems. While I keep a list in my wallet of additives and preservatives that I always stay away from, a simple rule of thumb is this: If the name of an ingredient is not used in a normal adult vocabulary, then it is probably not going to be good for my bladder!!

I can second Julie - I've discovered foods that bother me don't ALWAYS bother me. Sometimes I can have a small amount, and as long as I don't make a daily habit out of it, favorite foods can still be at least TASTED.

I haven't done much with the major no-no's (tomatoes, citrus - anything high acid), and I'm pretty sure now that I'm actually allergic to strawberries (which is just crushing - I love strawberry shortcake!), but the occasional slice of bread with a good peanut butter (look for fewer additives on the label) is something I can handle every once in a while! :)
