I was wondering if there were any difference from a Cystoscopy in the office and the hospital? If you don't have a Hydrodistention does that hurt the chances of finding something, like ic?

yes there is the one done in the hosp your a sleep and don't have to feel the pain and i hear that the one done in the office is painful there is no way i would do the one in the office.
but that is my personal op.
plus when they do it when your a sleep they do more and see more of your bladder. hopefully someone else will come along that can explain this to you better i'm not to good at explaining things like this i just know what has happen to me.
sending you many many hugs and prayers
Rhonda.

p.s how is your cold/flu coming alone i hope its over with and your bladder is also feeling better i have been thinking about you alot i have been busy with getting our house over in our name also so that is why i got behind plus i was sick there for a week in a half but feeling much better now.

I had one done in the office...it didnt hurt me just some discomfort...because he gave me 2 shots to numb the area...but problem was that he said,"i really cant see anything we will have to have it done at the hospital"...So I had the Cysto ?Hydro done at the same time and he took pics of my bladder.Yes the one at the Hospital is better and you are asleep through it all.
Good Luck

Yes, an in-office cystoscopy can miss signs of IC. You need to have a cystoscopy and hydrodistention done at the hospital to be sure. During this one, you're asleep and the doctor fills your bladder with fluid to "overstretch" it a little... this would hurt too much to do in the office, so they put you under. Often, the glomerulations and pinpoint bleeding that is characteristic of IC does not show up until the bladder is distended like this, so it is often considered a gold standard for IC diagnosis.

Actually there's a big difference between an office cystoscopy and one done with hydrodistention. During an office cysto, the doctor is able to see the bladder lining. During a hydrodistention, the bladder is actually stretched. If you split the word into two: hydro and distention (distended with water) it makes it easier to understand. It's when an IC bladder is stretched that the characteristic pinpoint bleeding appears.

An IC bladder can look totally normal and healthy in the office. Mine did. It was when it was distende that the IC became visible.

I have had office cystoscopies and, while it's not my favorite thing, it's about the same discomfort as being catheterized. The good thing is tht you don't have to be in the hospital and have an anesthetic.

Kioyka,
A hydrodistention can help diagnose IC but it can also miss it too. It actually is no longer considered the "golden standard" for IC diagnosis. Researchers agree that it is a diagnosis reached by exclusion; that is, excluding all other medical factors and taking into consideration your medical history, reactions to meds, various test results, etc. The hydro/cysto/biopsy done in a surgery setting is great at diagnosing ulcerative IC. But there is another form of IC, non-ulcerative, that can be missed. I'm one of those patients and it is fairly common, unfortunuately (you can learn more about my experience at the link in my signature). But don't worry about this! If your doctor is IC knowledgeable, he'll know this and work with you to get you the proper diagnosis and treatment you needs.

Good luck and let us know how things go!
