10 mg Tofranil 3x per day.... weight gain??

I am just curious to hear from any of you out there currently taking Tofranil, how is the weight gain side effect?? Is it as bad as elavil? I really, really cannot gain weight. i struggled with an eating disorder in HS and have prided myself these last several years on how eating no longer bothers me.. and with working out I am able to keep a great body and self esteem. I am afraid of the negative mental consequences that could come about if a medication made me gain weight rapidly.

Would love to hear from anyone on this drug.

Hello Jena!

I am currently taking Tofranil, although my dosage is much lower - 10mg, once a day at night time.

I was on Elavil before but that made me incredibly hungry all the time and also caused retention so I stopped. I was also scared of putting on weight with it!

However, with the Tofranil, the opposite has happened. I've actually lost some weight and my appetite has gone down from what I used to be. I was on 25mg at one point but that started causing me retention issues like Elavil so I dropped back down to 10mg. This seems to be the best dosage for me.

Everyone is different though and you seem to be on a much higher dosage but I hope that it doesn't cause you any weight gain or other symptoms!

So with the tofranil you didn't get the retention? That's good maybe I can try that I was so hopeful about the elavil but I got the retention. Does tofranil make you sleepy like elavil?

Hi there - I am taking 50mg of Tofranil every night. I have not had an issue with weight gain since using this medication. I did have retention issues but they were not related to the Tofranil and have cleared up since I got my Interstim. I do have to watch what time I take it at night b/c it makes me groggy in the AM so I have to make sure I take it before 9:30ish. Good luck! :)

I take 10 mg 3 x a day. I have not gained weight, but I did gain 10 pounds while on Lyrica, so I switched to Tofranil and have not gained anymore, but can't seem to get the 10 lbs back off. It has caused some retention, I think, because I just feel puffy. Some other symptoms I have from it are: sweating whenever I exert any energy, stiffness, ringing in my ears. I go back and forth on whether I want to keep on it. I just hate the 10 lbs! But I do feel alot better. It has helped with my pain.

Forgot to say that it caused constipation and so I take a stool softener twice a day. That seems to take care of the problem.

It only caused me retention when I increased my dosage to 25mg from 10mg. Now I stick to 10mg and it seems to be helping with my frequency/urgency. Tofranil didn't make me as drowsy as the Elavil did (with Elavil, within 1/2 an hour of taking it I was out). However, if I take it around 8:30pm at night, I seem to get a sounder, less interrupted sleep. Any later and I'm super groggy in the morning!

I hope the Tofranil gives you some relief! I was so sad when I had to stop the Elavil because it helped my pain so much!
