Yikes--I have another UTI. Call me nuts, but didn't I tell Mr. Meanie urologist that if he did not get the retained urine out I would continue to get these. Ponder...So after 2 weeks on Augmentin which gave me diarrhea of the century I am now spending 2 more weeks on Tequin. Wonderful..plus increased pain and barfing. My husband is coming to Las Vegas for Easter so he will be thrilled that I'm flaring in his presence. Keep me in your prayers everyone. This is really getting old.
Hugs and Happy Easter,
Barb:bonk:
I hope you feel better soon!

Sorry bout the UTI Barb... definately in my prayers. And stinks that you, Chell, also have an infection. Hope you both feel much better soon and can share in lots of smiles.
Why are uros mean? All i can think of is they were really meant to be oral surgeons... Anytime my uro goes near me I'm ready to scream, I know what's coming... grrr

This may sound silly... but I'm still suffering a lack of information. (Just ordered a few highly rated books on IC)
I've had maybe 2 UTIs in my lifetime... are they really common with IC, or does it vary by case?
Hope everyone gets over them quickly!

Barb, I'm so sorry about this UTI!!!!! :grouphug:
I hope it gets better fast!!
And amethyst79--- some ICers get a lot of UTI's, it seems. But, there are those of us like me who hardly ever get them. I have had maybe 2 in my life... however, when I do get them, I get them BAD. It's because I often can't tell I have one, and so they climb all the way to my kidneys and I end up so sick that I have to be hospitalized so they can give me IV antibiotics. Yuck. I haven't had a true UTI since I was 19 though (and I'll be 30 in 2 weeks) ... thankfully! That time I was in the hospital for a week! They had me on ampicillin and gentamycin both, via IV... and I had to have this shunt installed in my vein because they had to draw blood 1 or 2 times a day to check the levels of gentamycin in my system. Apparently that is really toxic and they have to monitor you carefully.
And my current uro isn't mean (although the one I saw before him was HORRIBLE, so I know how it feels to see a meanie)... this guy is the nicest man. He believes IC is serious and painful, and takes good care of me. In fact he was in there during my last DMSO treatment... his nurse was cathing and doing the DMSO, and he was up by my head with his hand on my shoulder telling me he knew it hurt but it would be over in a second. He also listens to me... I don't feel "brushed off."
I wish you guys were closer, because I'd refer you both to him in a flash!!!!

Thanks for everybody's words of encouragement. Chell, to add on to what everyone else has said, some get UTI's and some don't with IC. I have the pleasure of having a cystocele, as well as a bladder capacity that was once around 1400 cc that is now about 300. I am only able to pee about half of it out which leaves a playground for bacteria. A cystocele happens when your bladder prolapses. Even though I felt like doo-doo at work, God used me for good. I had a patient call in to ask a question about UTI's. After looking at her info in the computer and getting a history--I asked her if she had ever been evaluated for IC--she said it had been mentioned but never went any further. Anyway, we wound up talking for about 10 minutes, realized that not only did we have a urological connection, she works for a dentist here in town that I know from college and we are the same age. She is being evaluated for IBS too. To make a long story short, I gave her this website and my phone number, and an appointment with the nice urologist in our clinic. She said what I mentioned made her feel like she wasn't crazy for the first time in over a year and that she had hope. Thank you God for letting me help another one of your suffering souls and for giving me the strength to do it at a low point for me. If you see her come up on the boards, please give her a hiya. (I know you wonderful people will anyway.) I am mentally doing pretty well, and think goodness for Percocet right now. Owie!
Hugs.

Barb, it's so great you were able to use your experience to help someone, sounds like you might have a great friend in the works too. God does put us all here for a reason, I firmly believe that. In my younger younger 20's (I'm only 25 lol) my son was diagnosed as Autistic. At first it was a huge blow for the family, but it also guided me. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my life; I received certification as an OT aide... started nursing school... After starting programs for autistic children and their families I decided to enroll in college, working towards a Bachelor's degree in Human Services with a focus in counseling skills. After my final two years, if my health is okay, I plan to continue towards a master's in social work. I am loving the education and I would have been clueless on aspects of the career if it wasn't for my son.
Being strong is the hardest part sometimes, it seems, but I think being here on the ICN boards gives us all that strength.

Chell,
Thanks for the kind words. Just in way you communicate on the boards, I think that you would make a wonderful social worker. You go girl. If my health improves, I am hoping to go to graduate school and become a CRNA--nurse anesthetist. I had gotten accepted to anesthesia school right after they told me(after 3 miscarriages) that because of my clotting disorders(I form blood clots and then can't break them down) that I could not carry a pregnancy to term...and two weeks after the acceptance letter I found out I was pregnant again..and thank God that baby who wasn't supposed to be here is now 3 1/2 and my life's greatest blessing.
Hugs,
Barb:)

Barb,
Make sure that you take Priobiotic supplements when you are on Antibiotics. I stagger them so that they're not immediately killed with the dose of A's and take them with food as well. This will really help your digestion.
My new doctor, a NICE urogynecologist who I just met today (a woman!) is putting me on low-dose antibiotics for 3 months because I've had so many UTIs in the past year. No fun at all. But I can't keep getting them. I need a break.
I hope you feel better soon!
Emily
