I was given Atarax (sp?) last time I went to the uro about six months ago. Well I didn't think I needed it cause the cysto/hydro helped me a lot. I had no pain anymore. Well it has come back. So I guess I should take the Atarax. He said it will knock you out. I work at night and go to sleep at daylight. Then I have to get back up at 7 am to get my son off to school. Then I have to be up again by 2 to 2:30 to go get him. If I take Atarax at 7 am will I be able to get up by 2 pm?
Maybe I should just wait 2 more weeks until school is out?

Everybody is different with how things effect them, but Atarax knocks me out. Luckily the first time I took it I had the next day off work because I slept all night, plus part of the next day and had to set an alarm to pick my son up from school. I'm sure people build a tolerance to it over time. Can you try it on the weekend? Good luck!

If so, how long did it take before you built up a tolerance to the sleepiness? I am just wondering how long I would be a zombie basically. And those of you have taken this, does it really help?

I couldn't really tell you because I never really built up a tolerance as my doctor gave it to me to get thru a really bad flare so I don't take it regularly. When I was in the bad flare I just cut it in half and took it earlier in the evening so I wasn't so groggy in the a.m. It's hard to tell if it helped because I increased the frequency of my instills and my pain tapered off so it may have been the instills too. It definitely helps me sleep if I am feeling really lousy. hopefully somebody can help who takes it regularly.
As a previous poster said, we are all different. That said I take Vistaril which is very similar to Atarax, both are hydroxyzine. I take 25 mg. every night and I am fine in 3-4 hours. I sometimes even take some during the day if I am having a bad day.
Now if I have a bad night I sometimes will take 50mg. and then I definately have to have a good 4-6 hours or it would be tough to stay awake.

How much are you taking? I take 100 mgs every night when I go to bed and I still wake up when I need to. Never used an alarm clock in my life. Been taking 100 mgs for I guess 10 years now and I there are times when I can't get to sleep very fast so I guess in a way my body has built up a tolerace to it. I was never a zombie in the morning but one thing since you have kids you might not hear them crying or getting up if you need to. I know I don't always hear family members getting up at night.
