Hi all,
Is there anyone here in Canada who had a script of Pyridium around for those monster flare ups/occasional need to use them? I have been told they no longer have this in Canada!! What is everyone using for the urinary analgesic equivalent?
Going to be driving from NS to ON this July and need to have something on hand for the long trip and the pain that will follow :( I am totally stumped as to alternatives to the Pyridium...
Seeing my doctor next week but I would like to have some ideas to bounce off her, as she is my GP - my uro is fairly useless...my GP helps me with it instead...
Thanks for any advice you guys have!!

I'm in BC, and just filled a prescription for Pyridium today... no one said anything to me about this. Maybe you should check with another source? Perhaps it's one certain manufacturer that's no longer supplying it?? Gee ... I'll be in deep trouble, too, if this is true!

yikes hope that this isn't true or I am up the creek without a paddle!! they stopped making urised because of lack of raw material! and that was my pill of chice that worked best, if they take this one I will be in so much trouble.

That is odd..., I get my pyridium perscription filled regularly. The pharmacist gives me the generic kind called Phénazo. I can get it no problem in ontario and quebec. Maybe you can ask if there is a generic equivalent in your province?...

I still get Pyridum but you can't get Pyridum Plus which helped me better. I don't know why they quit the plus. I wish it would come back.

I am heading into my doctor tomorrow, I am hoping she can tell me it's still available! I had been told by another woman in my area who was asking about it, and her uro told her it wasn't being made for sale in Canada any longer...I looked it up online, and sure enough, that's what I found...

I'll hopefully get a refill tomorrow though - we have a lot of long road trips this summer, and I will def. flare up at the end of it, and don't want to be out of province with no stand by med!!

I just saw a post yesterday I think that someone in Canada was able to get Pyridium aka pheno...the generic name. Possibly even OTC. Will see if I can find that thread and will post link to it if I find it.

Pyridium a must for me. Gotta have it. It is available OTC in the US as Uristat and AZO Standard so if not available in Canada if you travel to US you can buy it at very reasonable cost OTC.

Click on link above. New ICN member Spitfire from Canada was able to buy Pyridium/Pheno...as of yesterday, if I am reading her post correctly. Maybe send her a pm for details if she doesn't see this thread. Take care:)

my doctor dispelled the rumour - she said it is still available in Canada, and was confused when I told her what we'd heard!
All I can say is thank god! I need 1-2 tablets/month sometimes with hormonal flare ups...and long car trips!

I just went to get my perscription of pyridium (aka phenazo) and they said it is completly discontinued. The manufacturer is no longer supplying it. Does anyone know of another similar drug that I could replace it with in Canada (Quebec)? The pharmacist told me that there was nothing she could think of.

I buy it OTC in the USA, it is a lower doseage than the RX's here, but I find the lower does works better for me, the doseage in Canada causes me retention. You can probably order it on line.

I just checked one of the Canada pharmacies on line and found phenazopyridine listed, which is pyridium. You might want to check to see if it's available under that name.

I was born in the US but most of my relatives are in Canada. OMG the horror stories I am hearing makes me very afraid for them. Many who are in dire need of immediate care come over to the States. I love Canada but their health care leaves much to be desired. Just my opinion.Thank God for computers as there are many sites where we can buy Meds. My best wishes and I hope you find help soon. Hi Uzes,

I'm on the north east side of Vancouver Island ... are you in BC, too?

Hi
I am in the Vancouver area. Do you think I should just give my urologist a call and see if he is willing to prescribe it?
There is just too much seasonal food that could had "extra added attractions"
to cause huge flares. I stick to the I.C. diet stringently but if your visiting what are you gonna do!
Happy Holidays!

I don't know if you need your urologist to prescribe it: I just take my old bottle into my GP, and she renews my prescription for me (might be faster to get in to see your GP!). I don't know if you saw my more recent post, but there is a pharmacist here in my town that is going to be "making up" pyridium type capsules (same ingredients, different name). The real problem for you will be finding a pharmacy or pharmacist that will make it up for you; look for a "compounding pharmacy", and then ask them if they'll make it up for you. If you can't find one, let me know and I can private message you the phone number of the guy here that's going to be making it for me; they might mail some out for you if you could get your doctor or pharmacy to fax them your prescription. He said that it would be a bit more expensive than the other stuff (since he has to make it up, rather than just counting out pills), but for me it's worth it! Hope you have a happy and pain-free holiday! : )

I live is a small town in Missouri and I tried to fill a script for Pyridium and I was told it is no longer available. The Pharmacist told me to take 2 of the AZO 92mg tabs and it's the same thing. Weird.

Thanks for the info, Laura, but we don't have any form of pyridium (including AZO) available over the counter here in Canada, because of the possible side effects on the liver. : ( Hence my excitement at finding a pharmacist that will compound it for me!

Blessings,

Wendy-Lee

we dont have anymore Pyridium in canada but you can order them very easy from the USA or purchase them when you go for a trip to USA.

Azo is not expensive at all.

Hi there....I was told that Pyridium is now discontinued...There is also nothing that is comparable to replace it...

"Pyridium" (which is the brand name of a combination of chemical compounds) HAS been discontinued here, but the chemicals that were used to make it are still available. You can't buy "pyridium" as such, but the active ingredients are still available, and you can buy basically the same thing in capsules IF you can find a pharmacist who is willing to mix it up for you.
