I think that I'm noticing that when I take Pyridium for bladder pain, that my urine seems to "burn" more coming out..... is this a normal side effect? What can I do about that? I'm on a medication that restricts calcium intake, so can't take it with any calcium based supplement (Prelief) or dairy products. Any ideas??

The only time pyridium did that to me was when I had a UTI. It didnt help at all. Otherwise I use it whenever I have a flareup and it gets rid of the pain. Pyridium should get rid of any burning pain.
I cant take any extra calcium. I actually get very sick when I do. I have no problems taking beano or prelief. I guess everyone is different when it comes to taking meds.

IMO, pyridum def. should NOT make it burn more. It is a numbing med & should take the sting out of peeing. I know when I take it, i feel the burn stop as soon as I start peeing the colors (usually orange)....i never heard it making it worse. Maybe call your doc. & see what he has to say???

GOOD LUCK

Gosh, no....Pyridium is a bladder/urirnary tract analgesic that is supposed to RELIEVE burning, not cause it. It is recommended to take Pyridium along with a large glass of water, and for some after a meal, to reduce or avoid any tummy issues. I don't know what else to say except that you are having a very odd side effect to Pyridium or possibly it just does not work for you at all. Please discuss this with your dr. There are other somewhat similar antispasmodic/analgesic bladder meds that may work better for you...some examples include Urelle, Prosed DS, Utira C, UTA to name a few. Often these types of meds are a mainstay of our treatment plans....each one of us may have our preference for one over the other so sometimes it just takes trying the ones that are available to find what works best for you. Take care!

The burning seems to be more in the vaginal area this time .... I wonder if I have a yeast infection from the antibiotics?? Ugh ...

Try one of the antispasmodics that turn the urine blue - urelle, prosed or utira-c. They helped me alot more and are safer for long term use. I personally have good luck with utira-c and it only costs me $10 for 60 pills. Ditropan xl (I used the generic) was also good for extreme urgency and frequency. Pyridium just didn't help me, I even tried pyridium plus which has a bit of barbituate in it and no relief. Hope this helps. Good luck to you.

pyridium used to work great for me. My uro at the time said it was ok if I took it for as long as I needed so I did. After a month and a half or so the relief was getting to be less and less and so I stopped the pyridium and got better.

Now when I take it, all it does is make me feel like I'm going to barf. It doesn't help my bladder any and instead it causes more burning.

I tried pyridium plus once a few weeks into my ordeal and it made me unable to pee. It was excrutiating having a bladder that full (I'd drank a lot of water) and unable to get anything out. The on call uro told me to soak in a warm bath first and if that didn't work go to the ER to be cathed. I soaked and soaked but couldn't go and finally I sent the worried family members (mom and fiance) out of the room and was able to pee. We still ended up in the ER because the tub trick only worked once... but by time I got back to a room and to talk to someone the drug must have worn off because I finally was able to pee a lot.

Now I just deal with the burning. It's mostly mild so after a while I just don't even notice it. Some of mine is vaginal feeling too... and I do have a hard to cure yeast infection. It was almost fully cured pre-cysto and I had no burning at all anywhere but then after the cysto and the run of antibiotics the burning is back so I think my yeast infection has exploded again.

Maybe see your gyno? If they say it doesn't look like you have one, ask them to send a culture off anyway just to make sure and to make sure it's not a strange yeast like mine (C glabrata) and make sure it's not resistent to any meds.

Thanks for all the advice and support, ladies. The burning has lessened somewhat, but I do think I have a yeast infection. I'm going to try some Canestin OTC, and if that doesn't work, will go back - yet again - to the doctor.
Thanks for the info about the different kinds of yeast, Bluheaven ... I will ask for a culture when/if I go; if you don't mind me asking: how do you treat the C galbrata? I do take acidophilus every day.

Mine was resistant to multiple Diflucans, Miconazole (monistat), Clotrimazole (lotrimin). It seems somewhat resistant to Tioconazole too. All those OTC creams. I tried a 2 week treatment of yeast arrest that didn't do anything either.

I finally did a 5 day run of Itraconazole pills 2x a day with a week of nightly 600mg vaginal capsule of boric acid. That got it 99% knocked out and I was supposed to continue a boric acid cap twice a week to finish it off but then I had my procedure done and all the antibiotics put my yeast infection back to the beginning. I still do the twice a week capsule but I need to make an apt with my gyno and probably be put back on another Itraconazole run. Which sucks because it gave me a rash. Maybe being on the Atarax it won't be so bad this time though. I think a good majority of my burning and maybe even some frequency is from the yeast.

A good acidophilus to look for is fem-dophilus. You can find it at places like whole foods and new seasons or other organic health type places. Make sure they have it refrigerated. It's two types of acidophilus bacteria that are
particular to the female system. You can find information about it online too.
I take one of those a day.. sometimes two! I also hear eating a lot of garlic is good for killing yeast.

in case anyone is not familiar with the different names...canesten, gyne-lotrimin, clotrimazole are all the same thing...generic name being clotrimazole.
This is the only yeast cream that I can tolerate (whichever name it goes by;)) and the only one that cures my yeast infections... and I dealt with chronic and recurring yeast for many many years, luckily now only occasional and mild, but this is still the only one that works for me without causing additional irritation and inflammation. I have VV in addition to IC so I am hypersensitive to most vaginal creams for yeast or what have you.

The suggestion of trying one of the refrigerated probiotics is a really good idea....they tend to be much more effective than the acidophillus bought off the shelf at the usual drugstore, pharmacy, grocery store.

Diflucan does not seem to work for me, even with repeated doses, tho I do still always have some on hand to take in addition to the cream. Monistat and Terconazole (sp??) make me flare BAD and do not cure my yeast. Monistat actually is pretty well documented by many of us here as being a huge irritant/flare starter, tho some can tolerate it.

Anyway, hope you feel better soon and that the canesten clears this up for you without incident!

Just went to the doc with a UTI, pretty bad burning to begin with, and after I took the pyridium the pain that came with peeing was the WORST i've ever experienced! my bladder itself feels better but the burning was just awful. I have to pee again now and I'm scared. definitely not taking it again for UTI symptoms.

the burning is so bad now I'm actually crying out in pain when I pee. . . my bladder is hurting again. I feel like this pyridium is to blame. I'm on cipro anti-biotics which i've never had before, but I don't think it can be them. . . How long untill the Pyridium will be out of my system? I took it at about 445 this afternoon. It's almost 8 now. Peed twice so far. Still bright orange. Hurting and scared :(
