I am petrified for tomorrow!!!! I had a catheter in the ER once and I am mortified to have anything in that "hole" again! It burned so bad they had to give me a pain shot. I am having a Cystoscopy tomorrow right in the doctor's office and am wondering if it's as painful as a catheter or worse? If so will he have some kinda pain med he can inject me with?

Thanks for your help and any tips will be helpful to me!

Doctors almost always will use a surface analgesic to do a cysto. The best advice I can think of is to relax, relax, relax. The way I do it is to concentrate on breathing slowly and evenly and consciously relaxing all of my muscles. And the procedure takes only a few minutes and it will be over.

Sending encouraging hugs,
Donna

I have had several urodynamics test and they always do a cysto. I have never had any problems other than anxiety about the catheter the first time. Have them tell you before they insert the catheter and exhale through your mouth as they insert the catheter.

Try exhaling through your mouth and see how your body will relax.

Ask if they will numb the urethrea before inserting the catheter.

I hope it goes easily for you, Shannon.

You also might want to ask your doctor for a moment to relax. I've learned that other people aren't mind-readers and are more likely to give me what I want if I let them know what it is.

Next week I'll be getting intimate with a catheter for the first time since the 1970s. I told the doctor he'll probably see his fingerprints from the exam he gave me a couple of weeks ago. Made him chuckle at least.

Hang in there!

Well, I chicked out today! I was so nervous the doctor wouldn't even do anything! And, I even took a valium! The office is going to call me next week to re-schedule and he is going to put me under. Thanks for all of your support and I was thinking of all of you when I was trying to stay strong!

Oh, I'm sorry it fell through, but maybe it is for the best. I had my cysto/hydro under IV sedation in a surgicenter & I was glad I was out. But I had a bladder biopsy too so I probably could not have been awake anyway. Please let us know how you make out.

I had an office cystoscopy done last October - and it was honestly not that bad. I am one of THE biggest worriers around, so you take my word for it: it's ok, it's a little uncomfortable of course, but that's about it, really nothing to get too worked up over (just imagine how much worse it's got to be for men)!

Anyway, good luck next week!

I think catheters have come a long way since my last experience with them. They were still using metal back then.
