I think that having a cesearan section or any type of surgery in that area of the body can cause IC. I know I started having problems after my C-Section and had an unusally long recovery. I was thinking too that the increase in people diagnosed with IC could also be due to an increase of C-Sections performed in the United States in the last ten years. What does everyone else think?

Janelle,
I will just say that the first support group meeting I went to, there were at least 4 ladies who strongly believe their IC was caused from vaginal deliveries. My IC started out mildly after I delivered vaginally 17 years ago. It may be coincidental?? Thirteen years later I developed full blown IC. I do agree with you that any type of abdominal surgery promotes an IC flare. My laparascopy did. It is all a big puzzle! And I keep thinking about all these children who have IC.

I will agree that any type of abdominal surgery...just as any large ammount of stress activates symptoms.

I had both my children vaginally, and lost one child in between to a miscarriage, so I had to have an emergency D and C then. When I was diagnosed with IC, I had several other surgeries done at the same time, my GYN doc asked me if I had any other surgeries because he had found adhesions. I was always curious if the adhesions he found, and cleaned up, as he said, started off my IC. Never had any problems until a couple of years ago, when I was diagnosed. :hmm: Iris.

My first IC symptoms started after a bladder infection I had. About a year later I had a vaginal delivery. I had a very hard time with it, I ended up with 107 stitches. My IC did not get any worse. Then with my second child I had a C-section. It was about six years after my C- section, when I started having hormonal changes that my IC became much worse. I really don't know if the C-section added to it or not. I'm sure it weakened my pelvic muscles. Do most IC symptoms starts right after the C-section, or years later?

I'm not sure, but I think the key point here is 'hormonal changes'. That may be one of the main reasons so many more women have IC, than men.
