so, reading over this thread, are if I can tolerate Detrol is there any advantage of one type of antispasmodic vs. the others. It seems like there are things like Detrol, Detropan and then Urelle and ... others that are more mild in their effects. Can anyone educate me on the differences, pros and cons of different types of these meds.
Thank you so much
Abigail
ps: this forum is a life line! I am having a hard time with a flare and starting different medication is exhausting and overwhelming. I really appreciate the helpful and kind advice.

Hi Abigail,
Some of the meds you mention above are antispasmodics, such as detrol and ditropan. Sanctura is another one. Urelle is a UTA or urinary tract antiseptic. It had several components, one of which is hyoscyamine, which is an antispasmodic. The UTA's contain analgesics and anti-infectives as well.
OAB (overactive bladder syndrome) is often treated with simple antispasmodics. Usually the symptoms of OAB are urgency and frequency caused by bladder spasms, and incontinence that may be the result of not being able to make it to the bathroom on time. OAB does not typically involve the burning pain that may be associated with IC or UTI-like symptoms. For most of us with IC a simply antispasmodic isn't enough--we need that in combo with other meds. Elavil, a very commonly prescribed drug for IC, has properties that are antispasmodic, anti-histamine and analgesic. So...there are LOTS of options! It's a matter of finding whatever works best for you; putting together a treatment plan can take some time--and patience.
Check out all the threads in "Treatments for mild IC" and you can see details about some of these meds.

I think its all in what works for you. Everyone's symptoms are different, so the right treatment is too. Vesicare and Detrol didn't work for me, Enablex did. A friend of mine has had success with Ditropan, but can't tolerate Detrol. I would try them until you find something that works well for you. Don't be afraid to go to your doctor and say "this isn't working." As my doc put it, there's a "boatload" of them out there, so keep trying! Frustrating as it might be, there's amazing relief to be had (if you're lucky) when you find the right one. *hugs* hope this helps some ... :)

There are many antispasmodics out there. Not everyone has success with the same ones.

Detrol made me flush and worsened my (already awful) rosacea.

I don't have much success with Detrol, but I do with the b&o (belladonna & opium) suppositories. They are both an analgesic and anti-spasmodic, plus I can control my dosage by cutting them in half or in thirds depending on my pain levels.

I just wanted to follow up on my "story". I've been taking the Detrol for ~ 6 days now and I'm definitely feeling better. Of course, the flare could be running its course, but last night I only got up to pee once! For me, that is great news.
The doctor thought I should try an antispasmodic and then after I saw how that went, start with an antihistimine. He didn't think I should try to many things at once ( which I liked about him). I think I'm ready to start on Atarax and work my way up to the dosage. Since I'm such a medicine light wieght, I'll have to inch my way up over several weeks, so that I'm not too dopey during the day.
I'm feeling hopeful.
Thanks
Abigail
