View Full Version : Spasms - scaring me!

Hello all,
I've just got a question about possible bladder spasms ...
I've been flaring since last night. It started with pain. Now, since this morning, my frequency and urgency have shot up. Nothing unsual there. However, I have non-stop spasms, on my right side, kind of just above my hip for about an hour now. I'm not sure if it is something to be concerned about.
I have had spasms before, but they only last about a minute or so. And they are few and far between. This is by far the worst that I've had them.
I was just wondering if these are the 'spasms' I've read about a few times on this board ... ? Is this a common IC symptom? I'm just scared and I can't get into my Primary Doctor until Sunday. I don't have a urologist at the moment - I'm on the hunt for one who can treat me. I can't get anything prescribed so if it is spasms, is there anything I can take at home that can calm them down?
Any help would be wonderful,
Thanks,
Ally

The only thing I can think of is a heat pad if you don't have any medications. If it gets any worse, I suggest an urgent care center or ER.

Spasms can be very painful.. Just if it gets worse this could be something else like your appendix being that it is on the right side...

If you have tenderness over the area, and especially if you have any fever or nausea, please seek medical attention immediately. Usually with appendicitis, if you press on the area, then release quickly, it hurts worse when you release --- that isn't always the case, but it's definitely a signal that you shouldn't wait even overnight before getting attention.

Thanks for your replies ladies ...
I'm not feeling nauseous or feverish at the moment. The spasms have eased off and aren't so intense and frequent as before. They started about five hours ago now. They weren't causing me any pain, moreso discomfort. I'm slightly in pain now, but I feel it is just my usual IC pain. IC confuses me so much sometimes ... also, my frequency and urgency have eased off to. Perhaps it was just a rapid flare ... ? Do normal spasms disappear after such a time? I've never had them before, for this long, that's all ...
If they return with intensity, I'll have to drag myself to the ER ...

I was just searching around on some old posts about spasms - some people explained it as feeling as if they're pregnant, like they can feel the kicking? That's exactly what it feels like for me! Like there is a little person knocking about in there! I am DEFINATELY not pregnant ... but I'm thinking it is moreso spasms then?

Hey :)
Thanks for asking! It was going really great for my pain, but on the other hand, it was causing me retention. I was running to the bathroom much more then I usually do. So, I've swapped to Tofranil. So far, things are going well. It's reducing my frequency but I can't really say much for it's effects on pain yet ...

i am glad you are feeling a bit better. give the tofranil ago dont give it up too soon. you can always go back to your gp and they can up the dosage. tofranil is supposed to be just as good as endep.

Yeah, so far, I'm pretty happy with it. I'm actually getting some solid hours of sleep in a row! I'll definately give it some time. I'm searching for a new urologist who can follow me up too ...
Hope your well,
Ally
