Hi everyone!
I was just wondering if Prelief really works for them. I haven't taken it continously (2 tablets 3 times a day). I have just taken the tablets when I think I'm eating an IC bad food. But, I had a decaffinated mocha once with Prelief and about a glass of low Acid OJ with Prelief, it didn't seem to help me at all. I went to the bathroom constantly after the coffee and felt burning the day after I had the OJ.
Should you be taking it continously even if you are eating good food for an IC patient so that the Prelief will work better? I'm not quite sure how to take the prelief and how good it works.
Any input would be really really appreciated.
Thanks,
Summermuffin
When my diet was more limited I only used Prelief once in awhile and only on medium risk foods. I didn't find that it was a magic pill for me - but many people do. I didn't rely on it much at all b/c it didn't make a huge difference for me.

:hi:
I do not take Prelief on a continuous basis...only when I think that a certain food might contain too much acid. Then, I take 1 or 2 Tabs.
I have found that I cannot eat or drink citrus, even with Prelief. That is a bummer because I love oranges. Every once in a while, I will drink a sip or two (and I do mean just a sip) of orange juice or have a section of orange. Never more than that and not as much as I would like.
Remember, mocha is chocolate and some people do not tolerate chocolate. Also, decaf still has acid in it and it is a diuretic. It makes me go like crazy. :D

I would say there may be some foods you can't eat even with Prelief...and some that you can. I doubt it makes a big difference weather you take it continuasly or not. Prelief is like a natural defense against acid...sometimes the more you take with some foods the better. It can kill stomach acid between meals as well as the acid in food. Some people will take 2-3 or so with each meal.
Contact me if you would more info from me on it.
I hope this helps you.

Hello! I have found much success with prelief. I take it with every meal - at first I think I was selective and only tried it with what I thought would be trigger foods. Now I take it with everything just to be certain. It's amazing how many foods have acidic properties and you might not know it. At first I wasn't completely sure if it was helping, but after being on it for a solid month, I felt an overall improvement. To be honest, I don't think I could live without it. I carry it in my purse and also have a bottle on the kitchen counter at home so I remember to take it. There have been times when I've forgotten and I've paid for it.
I hope this info helps. Good Luck finding success with prelief!

Hi!
Here is a posting from Mr. Alan Kligerman, AkPharma's CEO and the developer of Prelief.......
Prelief does bind acid from foods, and if you take Prelief without foods it will indeed bind up some of the acid in the stomach. The big thing with Prelief is its action beyond acid reduction: There is good reason to believe that both the completely free calcium ion in Prelief (contrasted with calcium in, say, calcium carbonate, which is relatively difficult to get released) and Prelief's glycerophosphate, work to palliate painful cells in the bladder and possibly elsewhere, e.g., the intestine. There are some real medical observations (Dubocq and DiTrolio, 2003) using a specific urinary marker, that Prelief is producing not only relief from pain in IC patients, but the markers of distressed cells are greatly reduced at the same time. In fact, both pain and the markers went repeatedly up when Prelief was withheld and dropped again when Prelief was taken. So something tangible is happening and a study is in the works to see if this is confirmable in structured clinical surroundings.
An ideal amount to take would be 6 tablets per day, either 3 tabs 2x per day or 2 tabs 3x per day. It is almost impossible to take too much Prelief, in terms of safety or for any other reason.
Hope this is helpful....

I found prelief to be helpful for some foods, not all. Very helpful for a Starbucks lattte (made with decaf, half strength, smallest size) & a cookie. Very helpful to put a half teaspoon of Marie's Ranch dressing on my salad.
Chocolate brownie? Sour cream on a baked potato? Prelief wasn't helpful for me on those. RATS! :toilet:
But am very glad to have a little Ranch dressing sometimes & the latte once in a while:)

Where can you buy this?
What foods have you found to be of comfort-I'm having a hard time right now because I am in so much pain-I can't tell if one food or another is good or bad....

Prelief didn't help me. I was also wondering if it would help if I took it on a regular basis. I've only tried it when I know I'm eating or drinking bad stuff (coffee, tea, salsa), with no luck. I took 3 tablets each time. I am also wondering if the powder works better than the tablets. Anyone?

Hi Rainsun,
Here are the foods I've found comforting (all homemade):
1. pancakes with real butter & real maple syrup
2. omelet made with 1 whole egg, 2 whites (filled with sauteed zucchini, mushrooms, broccoli - all finely chopped & lowfat mozzarella cheese, with a tiny bit of garlic & oregano)
3. roasted turkey breast (buy just the Foster Farms turkey breast, lightly coat with oil, roast in pan for 65 minutes)-makes 2 dinners & 2 lunches for me!
4. Firehouse meatloaf recipe in the "Taste of the Good Life" cookbook-with mashed potatoes, steamed carrots
5. Butterscotch brownie recipe in the "IC Chef" section of this website ;)
6. Rice with a fried egg on top
7. Hamburger with fries & a vanilla milkshake (This is one of the few restaurant meals I can eat if I make sure fries have salt only, get the burger with lettuce only, make sure the milkshake is just milk & ice cream -- I still take prelief with it in case of preservatives in bread & so I can have a 1/2 tsp of ketchup)
Items 1-6 I can eat without prelief, I take prelief anytime I eat in a restaurant mostly because of the acid preservative possibility, but also I still order on the "safe" side of the IC diet. (Hamburger or egg breakfasts are safest for me)
Hope you got some ideas for foods you might like.
:hi: Karma,
i'm really food sensitive, so you may get different answers from other people... But, for me Prelief works when I want to have a tiny amount of the no-no food along with a larger amount of "safer" foods. Like a tsp of ketchup with a burger & plain fries. Or a half tsp of Marie's Ranch dressing on a fairly large salad. Or a small decaf nonfat latte made half strength at Starbucks.
It gives me a tiny margin of extras, but has not radically changed my diet. Maybe you could try it on that basis...
Good luck

Hi again!
We recommend taking Prelief regularly.....at least 2 tablets 3 times a day, preferably with meals. Many IC patients take 2 tablets at bedtime as well.
Prelief tablets and powder are one and the same. Prelief powder removes the acid in the food prior to consumption. Prelief tablets remove the acid after/while the food is consumed. The tablets are more popular because they are more portable, more convenient and less expensive. (The stores carry the tablets which are the better seller; the powder can be ordered direct or online.)
(For RainSun) All Walgreens, Eckerd Drugs, RiteAids, Publix, Meijers, Osco, Albertsons, Medicap Pharmacies, Harris Teeter, and Brooks should have Prelief on the shelf with the antacids. And any pharmacy including WalMart, CVS, and Costco can Special Order Prelief for you. If you would advise where you are located, I may be able to provide the names of other stores in your area stocking Prelief.

Hi all,
Thanks for the info. I'm on 20mg of Elavil right now...and seeing how I feel. My doctor told me to increase the dose by 10mg each week until I feel better...but to stop once I've reached 40mg. Well...I'm still baffled. I don't know what I'm supposed to feel right now...I've been on 20mg for 4 days. Should I feel 100%...no pain and frequency?
Anywho, I've also been taking Prelief only when I think I'm having bad food for IC patients. I haven't touched decaf or regular coffee, tomatoes, orange juice, chocolate, or even soda for at least a month. But, I'm still feeling bad...so maybe I should start taking 6 tablets a day...2 every meal...even if I think I'm eating IC safe food. Hopefully that will make a difference and I can feel better again.
Thanks,
Summermuffin
I keep meaning to order some. I still haven't!
I'm usually on the internet at work, and I can't order it from here.
