I post a couple of days ago about antidepressants that don't cause retention. Since then, I'm learning a lot!
I can't take SSRIs - Paxil, Prozac, etc. because they are serotonin inhibitors and cause the bladder to relax too much. Combined with PFD and for me you have retention and PAIN. But, they help so much with my brain.
So, my doctor suggested we try am SNRIs (norepinephrine inhibitors) - I've been on wellbutrin (a baby dose) since Friday afternoon. Most of the side effects are going away, but I noticed today that my bladder pain increases significantly within an hour of taking a dose.
Always always curious, I figured out how they work this afternoon and discovered THIS - norepinephrine causes urethral smooth muscle to contract! While the bladder is fine, the urethra is pulled tight and shut and again...retention.
So, dammed if I do and dammed if I don't....MAYBE.
I've also discovered that if I take a small dose of xanax about 1.2 hour when I start to feel the spasms, I feel fine within about fifteen minutes. It stops the spasms.
I'm hoping...maybe...possibly...PLEASE?????....that these are part of what my doctor calls activation symptoms (as were the headaches and feelings of drinking a pot of coffee) and that after my brain gets used to the increase in norepinephrine the spasms will subside. Crossing fingers.
