View Full Version : Baking soda
I've been reading that baking soda is helpful as well. Is this just for pain? or frequency too? And also, do alka seltzer and club soda do the same thing?

Baking soda seems to calm all of my IC symptoms, the pain, burning, frequency and urgency. It can cause problems for those who need to limit their sodium intake though.
I have heard some say Alka Seltzer works, but have never tried it myself. I've not tried Club Soda either, but hopefully you'll hear from some who have experience with these two.

Vicki,
What do you do with the baking soda that it helps? Is it swallowed in water, or just put on the area?

I mix it into water and drink it. Some say 1 teaspoon to 8 ounces of water, but that ratio makes me gag. I mix 1/2 teaspoon per glass, chug that first one down. Then mix another glass and sip it over time.
I believe what it does is to neutralize the acid in the bladder.

I can't take soda because of high blood pressure so I take Tums instead. It works for me and also adds calcium.

Thanks everyone! I will try the baking soda the next time I have a flare and see if it works for me.
