View Full Version : Can we flare....just to flare??
The day before yesterday I ate everything right....had a good day. Then yesterday, still eating all the right things, I was going alot the first part of the day and having lots of pressure. Do our bodies flare just for the fun of it??
I mean how can I tell if it's a particular food when I just flare out of nowhere?? I'm trying to control what I intake, but now I'm wondering why I am having so much pressure and running to the bathroom a million times!!!
I would love to buy the books on here, but I have no money. I went to the big bookstore chains around here, but no books.
Oh, and I went to the library too.

Many things can cause a flare besides food. I would journal how much you do in a day, weather, stress level, what you do, and anything that could provoke an allergy or was a change
Things that cause fares:
stress, food, food allergies, certain vitamins, nasal allergies, fumes, over working yourself, exercising wrongly or too much, sex, gas, hormones, yeast infections, bacterial infections, smoking, car rides, viruses or being sick, being over tired, treatments affecting you badly, test affecting you badly, surgeries, baths of more than just water, temperature or weather changes, diarrhea or constipation, hunger or over eating, and many other things. Basically journal as much as you can and if it seems more likely that your flare was something re test foods out. :grouphug:
Rembmer as well...too much of something may flare you when a little may not...quantities count. I myself went for a time when almost any food would bother me...because my IBS would spasm from eating. figuring that out prevented a lot of flares!

not that your body can't just change or flare for no reason but to have as much control over this mess as you can you need to pay attention to more than your diet usually :grouphug:

The answer to your question is YES!!!!! That was that hardest thing for me. When I was new I posted a similar post but mine was so much more desperate because I was in sever pain at the time. So yes we can flare to flare but it might also be caused by something. I know my IC hates stress or even a really busy crazy day. You also can flare form a food your ate in the last few days. The best thing to do is keep an IC diary (I know how hard that is for some including me). The benefit of doing so is to look for patterns. Try doing so for a few months. Oh and many people flare based on their cycles.
In regards to books you might try calling Jill. Also there is so much great information on this site on and outside of the message board. You might try reading the doctor interviews or the research section.

Sometimes a flare can come from no where.. I guess like Katrina said just a little of to much of something could set it off.. IC really has no rhyme or reason.. What I have learned to do is just to expect that I am going to flare from time to time and when I do I know my body will need a little extra TLC. So as soon as I can, I soak in a hot tub, get the heating pad out, get a big glass of ice water and get in my recliner and I do nothing until it passes..
Thanks for all that info!! It's good to know that it could be something else as well. I'm always stressed. Divorce was final last May. I have 2 boys, my youngest has autism. I have also just learned that my older son probably has Addison's diease. We are waiting for test results. It's just been test after test...eliminating what it could be. He has been missing alot of school, and only going half days....at least when he can. He is dizzy and extremely tired. I also work from home, basically part-time....cause I can never seem to put in enough hours. Money is tight too. Which really makes this diet a bit difficult. I'm really just eating the basics.

Hey Mish,
So sorry you are overwhelmed with all of this {{{HUG******
Unfortunately, yes...we can easily flare for seemingly no reason at all!
Soon after I was diagnosed, I told my doctor about finding the IC diet and that I had been following it to a tee, so why was I still in so much pain??
His reply was something like: "That is one of the things that has us so stumped about IC--flares can happen for no apparent reason."
So, even the docs know about this additional problem we have when suffering from IC.
I have found, however, that by keeping a daily journal--I have one for everyt month so far!--I can at least control the number of flares I have by "looking for patterns" (like Sally suggested). Sometimes it is something that I have eaten...and sometimes it is stress. And then, yes, sometimes it is for no apparent reason! But if I can avoid the diet flares by making the right food/drink choices, and try to avoid the stress flares by staying as calm as I possibly can, then maybe the only flares I will have are the ones that have "no apparent reason"...
So, I do all I can on my part ... and sometimes that's the best we can do...
Hang in there, and do everything you can to keep the pain and other symptoms away. If you do that, then hopefully you will be a bit stronger and better able 'to ride it out' when a UFO does come along (UFO=Unidentified Flare Origin! :))
Let's us know how we can help...

p.s. I know that with everything else you have going on your time is probably limited, but maybe if you wrote in your journal about everything in your life, it would help you cope better with being so overwhelmed all the time. We all need an 'outlet' when too much is coming at us at the same time. And for you, that could well be a major trigger right there!
