I was diagnosed with IC two years ago, and my urologist prescribed Elmiron (200 mg) twice a day. About two months after I started to take Elmiron I became extremely nauseous even when I took the medicine out of the capsule and placed the contents in a shot glass of water and took it with several saltine crackers. I also felt nervous and about one half hour after taking Elmiron my heart beat was faster and my blood pressure would rise substantially.
After five months, I stopped the Elmiron and started to take Cystoprotek. After I stopped the Elmiron I did not feel real well for about three months, but I stuck with the cystoprotek only. One thing that helped me was walking as it seemed to reduce or eliminate the lower pelvic pain on my right side. This past January I was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection and treated with anti-biotics that seemed to help for abit, but the infection keeps resurfacing, and my urologist says this is due to the IC.
My urologist would like me to go back on oral Elmiron, and this time take the medication with food. However, I did not like the way I felt the last time I took this medication; my urologist indicated that I am the first person to say that the Elmiron pumped up my blood pressure and heart beat. I do have hypertension and most assuredly a double type A personality.
Has anyone else experienced problems such as I have with Elmiron and if so, how were these problems resolved?
I also asked my urologist about probioitics and IC, and he did not give me a definitive response as to whether probiotics can be helpful to IC patients. My internist would also not comment on probiotics as well. Are probiotics helpful with IC patients? I have no idea.
Thanks much for reading my long plea for 'a little help'. IC has definitely made me aware how fragile my body is.
