I went to the doctor to talk to her about some blood work I had done last week. Turns out thats fine. While I was there, I asked her about this thing on my nose. Its small and whitish pink. Its been there for over a year and has grown a little. I mentioned it to her. She looked at it briefly and said it was probably melanoma. Then she told me she would prescribe me a cream. Im to use it every day, and within a month, this thing on my nose will turn black and fall off and go away.
She acted like it was no big deal. Like she was prescribing me medicine for an ear infection or something else minor like that. I dont know wether I should be concerned or not. This medicine that Im getting is over $200 without my insurance. My cost is like $50. My pharmacy didnt have it, so Ill have hubby pick it up tomorrow. I dont know the name of it.
Any thoughts?

It seems like you don't have enough information. That would make me nervous. Do a little research on this drug and see what it's about. Then I would call your doc and see why she didn't refer you to a dermatologist first.

Please get a second opinion. Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Deadly, in fact. Please have it checked out further. I have never heard of a cream for treatment of melanoma.

When you get the prescription, I suggest you do an internet search about it. Melanoma can be serious.

I think you should get a second opinion from a dermatologist. I had a raised bump on my nose that concerned my doctor so she sent me to a dermatologist. He removed it, tested it and everything was okay. I hope the same for you.

I agree with the others Kim, I would have it checked out by a dermatologist, this can be serious..

Kim...Are you getting a hint that a visit to a dermatologist is a good idea? :)

I finally had some time to sit down and do some research on this. From what I can tell (and Im no doctor) I MIGHT have basal cell carcinoma. I found a picture of such a thing that looks close to what I have. What I also read about it, is that its very slow to grow. I have had this thing on my nose for well over a year, and it hasnt grown. I thought for the longest time it was some sort of zit or something.
Im going to give this cream the 30 days that my doctor prescribed. Then Im heading to a dermatologist. Im going to make the apt on Monday. Im going to let them know what my regular doc said. If they want to see me sooner, I will go.
Ill keep everyone posted! Thank you!!

I've had basal cell carcinoma and it's usually no big deal. I had one on my shoulder for years before I asked my doctor about it and had it surgically removed (they're usually treated more aggressively when they're not on your face) with no problems.
The medicine is aldara and is very expensive. When I had a suspicious spot on my nose, I went to a dermatologist and it was precancerous so she put me on aldara.
The best advice she gave me (besides no sun during the treatment) was not to bother opening a new packet every day. Just fold the top of the foil packet over a few times and it should keep for at least 3 days.
Of course, this is hearsay, so please check with someone qualified before trying it yourself.
