I am having an in office cystoscopy tomorrow and i am so scared, its giving me nightmares!!! i have heard horror stories about having it done this way. has anyone done this w/ out any issues during or after? dr moldwin is doing it, so that makes me feel better, but i am afraid it will hurt and put me in a worse flare then i am currently in. my insurance wouldnt cover me being knock out for it since i had one less then a year ago, but my dr wants it done because lately when i hold my urine in too long i pee a lot of blood. also to add to my stress we are expecting 5-8 inches of snow tonight and 3-5 tomorrow...figures...if anyone can let me know what they experienced w/ this i would appreciate it!!! Thanks!
Also, my dr told me to take 2mg of valium 30 min before to help me relax, did it work for anyone else?

My first in office cysto in January wasn't bad at all and I had very little pain afterwards. My second this past Thursday in office I had a cysto, a Potassium Choloride, and a DMSO test. Needless to say, I am still hurting.
This sounds stupid, but usually works for me... when I'm flaring, for some reason, if I eat gassy foods and get bloated, my pain diminishes. Doesn't completely go away, but definitely helps. Sad but true. Have you ever noticed if your pain is less when your gassy?
I took xanax before mine and it helped a lot. Close your eyes and go to your happy place :)

thanks Jen, i have never noticed if being gassy helps a flare or not, but its worth a shot. after my cysto the dr is putting a cocktail in, the numbing kind. the weather is so bad here that i am wondering if i will even have it done or reschedule for tues. thanks for the reply!!!

Mine was not done in the dr's office but I wanted to say good luck, I think taking something prior to your appt would make you feel a lot better!

If you can relax, you'll do better with this test. My relaxing technique is to concentrate on breathing slowly and deeply and consciously relaxing my body. It only lasts a few minutes and then it's over.
You're fortunate to be able to see Dr. Moldwin.
Warm hugs,
Donna

hi everyone. i had it done today at 11:30am. it was very quick and i got to watch it on a tv, so that was interesting. they saw some very inflamed areas and he thinks it could be blood vessels causing the bleeding when i hold in my pee too long, i stretch out my bladder, but he also wants to send me for a cat scan to see if theres a stone stuck in my ureter. but i have always had blood in my urine since i first has ic, especially if i ate buffalo wings. it was uncomfortable, but not bad at all. afterwards they put in a cocktail. now i have some rebound pain and it hurts a lot. and i am bloated. i had a hard time peeing an hour after to about 4 hours after and now i am peeing every 15 min. its so annoying. i am going back tomorrow to learn how to do cocktails myself. oh dr moldwin also said i would be a good candidate for interstim, i just dont know about it. i have to do research on it, but i think i would rather wait until after my wedding. sorry if this post is all over the place, its prob from the pain meds. thanks for all the support.

I'm sorry your having pain! I was in pain for a solid week after mine. Mine went: potassium test - cysto w/hydro - DMSO. I thought I was going to commit violent crimes a few hours afterward! I didn't get sad, I got extremely, extremely angry. And no pain pills or nothing. I went back 5 days later and told my uro to either give me 10 vicodins to get me through what he did to me or I'd go to an ER or well... there were some choice words. lol. He knew I was just upset about how much pain I was in. Plus, he's friends with my whole family, what's he gonna do? Not see me again? lol
I hope you feel better! Take care!

tinkerbell-
i am having mine done tomorrow and i am scared too! i am glad yours wasnt so bad. :( they are using a flexible scope and numbing me with lidocaine i believe but for some reason i am still really nervous. i know i will hurt afterwards but after urodynamics i am absolutely petrified of what an in office cysto will be like. i have had one before but i was under general anesthesia. i guess i am just kind of excited to see it on the tv :) :hi: -ducky

Ducky, I was nervous too before I had mine. It wasn't half as bad as I'd feared and watching it on the monitor was really interesting!
Do try to make a conscious effort to relax for the procedure as that will make it go easier.
Let us know how it turns out for you!

I'm getting mine done on Monday. I'll be "knocked out" but I'm really worried about the pain afterwards and flaring up. Is it normal to be given pain meds after the procedure?

ducky-i hope it went well and you are feeling ok.
TrinityEngel-you should get pain meds for the rebound pain. my first one they just gave it to me and my second i had to ask. but dont be afraid to ask for what you need.
good luck to both of you!!! keep us posted...

Has your doc considered it with hypodistention? My bladder showed up the irritation and stuff that way, but not just the cystoscopy itself. Did get pain meds, but also antibiotics and stuff in case of infection. This may sound silly too, but one thing that helps get through the pain is to hold someone's hand. :) Sometimes I will actually ask a nurse around (or the one doing it if I can hold onto their wrist). I volunteer in an ER and have done it for some patients too.

thank you! well actually i havent been able to face this site because i was so sad i just wanted to get my mind away but...it did not go very good because i was in excruciating pain during the simple cysto, and when they got it in...everything looked normal! :( i have vulvodynia too so the doctors think that there must be some kind of nerve pain issue in my bladder and urethra too. i should have stayed at the clinic and asked them more questions but i was so upset that everything looked normal and i wanted to just leave. its been three years and i really just want answers that i am not getting! haha. honestly i am in pain every moment of the day and i felt like they were going to look in and gasp at the way my insides looked! but nope. i did have a cysto under anesthesia before and i showed glomerulations and some inflammation and what not but the urologist this time said that even in normal people those things can show up when their bladders are filled up to the capacity that they use when you get a cysto under anesthesia. i am just terribly confused and frustrated. i want to know why i have pain and no one can tell me! :cussing: hahaha :)

is it possible that i still have ic if i dont show any evidence in an in office cysto? like i said they found glomerulations and inflammation when i had an under anesthesia cysto...agh confused. oh and by the way i always have nurses hold my hand!!!!!:lmao:

Ducky, if you believe my doctor, he says that IC bladders can look perfectly normal. He diagnosis based on symptoms because of this. I'm abnormal because I have blood in my urine-- so I have to get the cystocsopy. :( I came right out and asked him if I would have to have the cystoscopy if I hadn't had blood in my urine and he said, "No."
He did offer to knock me out for the cysto, but then I started finding out that it's true general anesthesia with intibation and everything (with biopsy), and since I don't want the hydro at this point, I'm back to thinking I should just bite the bullet with the in office cysto. Your post scares me, though, because I have vulvadynia also. :(

haha oh i believe your doctor because i know i have real pain! and i didnt mean that my cysto hurt because of my vulvodynia, actually my vv has been pretty manageable with a drug called gabapentin..what i meant was that since i have vv and the docs found nothing in my bladder, they just figured maybe i have nerve pain in my bladder and my urethra too since that is what vv is and i have that. almost like they were implying maybe whatever is causing my nerve pain for my vv is causing it for my bladder and urethra. the cysto is very short and the worst part for me was the urethra pain. i dont know. it just sucks when you get that look from the doctors like "hmmm....i dont know what else to say to you because you are normal". there are many people that have the in office cysto everyday and it is fine for them. in fact i have read more good about it than bad. maybe try to take some pain meds before it not just after it too :hi:

hey ducky...just wanted to let you know that my first cysto showed IC, my second showed i had a perfect bladder and my third showed ic but not as bad as my first. my dr says a lot of people with ic have normal looking bladders...so dont worry too much about it.
