View Full Version : Flare from in-office cysto?

Hi All,

I've read the mixed reactions to the cysto/hydro, but I have a question about the in-office cysto.

I had one last Tuesday last week. I then had a flare all weekend. For awhile my stream was very weak and I was constipated. I took hot baths and invested in a heating pad. That gave me some relief. I am still experiencing bladder discomfort. It feels like my bladder was on the losing end of a bare-knuckle fight.

Is this somewhat common (I know everyone is different)? Or should I be trying to figure out what else might have caused the flare?

Cheers,
Stephanie

Have you been checked to be sure you don't have an infection? It does sound like a possibility.

I always have a bad reaction to being cathed or in the same case, after having anything shoved up my urethra. I get killer spasms that just won't go away on their own. I would recommend asking for urelle, prosed or utira-c. They should give you some relief. You would need to get a prescription for them, but it is something that your doctor's office could call directly into a pharmacy for you. Hope this helps. Good luck to you.

Could be a flare from the procedure or an infection. I hope you figure it out soon and get back to feeling better. :)

Thanks for the replies. My symptoms are getting better. I was tested yesterday for an infection yesterday, and said they would find out the results of the culture tomorrow.

The only pain relief my urologist has recommended for IC is in-office rescue instillations. If it isn't an infection, then I'll maybe go in for one. It isn't much help on the weekend though. I ended up using some left over pain killers from an operation.

I have an upcoming check up with my general physician, so I hoping to ask her for pain management if my urologist won't prescribe me anything.

My in-office cysto also caused me a setback. I went in feeling pretty good. The first day or two afterwards I felt like you, with an increase of bladder symptoms and a bit of stinging. Just as those symptoms were starting to fade, an infection kicked in that resulted in a month-long flare. (And I get very few infections.) I believe that if I had been given a prophylactic antibiotic I would have had a couple days discomfort and that's it. Can't prove it, but I think it's smart to get a script whenever a cysto is done. My husband had a cysto and they just handed him a Levaquin on the way out the door. Better one little dose than a full course after the fact. That's my uro now!

I agree, it could be a infection. I was told by my regular doctor that catheterization poses a high risk for contracting a UTI. The uro's will not tell you this for some reason( maybe because that is their specialty and what they know how to do, I do not know). I even read in the newspaper that cathter induced infections are the biggest issue when it comes to life threatening infections in hospitals that UTI is one of the biggest.
I am glad you got a urine culture sent out. Hopefully you will start to feel better soon. In the future, if you ever have any type of insrtumentation done to your bladder, you should request a antibitoic for a few days to be sure you do not get a UTI.

They did give me a one-time antibiotic afterward (I forgot to add that). Because of the antibiotic and the fact my symptoms are improving, I thought it was likely a flare. I should find out today from my test results.

I've been fairly strict on the IC diet, so I am a bit puzzled to think of the cause other than the cysto. My flare seemed to include some type of muscle spasm or tightness (which isn't typical for me). Perhaps I am a bit like Elamar. Now it feels like I'm in a tail of a flare.

Thanks again, Stephanie

Just a follow up: it was negative. After 11 days, I am now going to go in for my first Elmiron instill on Monday. I am just an IC newbie, but I hope the time between flare onset and instills shrinks.
