View Full Version : a couple dexedrine questions

Hi,

I have been suffering from ic problems for over ten years, particularly frequent urination, constant bladder irritation, chronic fatigue, stomach problems, and more. I've tried dextro and have found it to be quite effective for the couple of days I've been on it. I just have a couple of questions:

1. It seems to only last for about 5 hours and then wears off - those of you that have found success with dextro, are you taking a sustained-release capsule, or just normal dexedrine? If I continue to take it, will it eventually start to work all day and not just a few hours?

2. Does anyone know how/why dexedrine works for IC? I've done some research on this and haven't been able to find anything - why does dexedrine work for IC while other amphetamines don't? How is dexedrine different?

3. Are there any safer, more natural amphetamines that might be similar to dexedrine that could help with IC?

4. I know that dexedrine is addictive - is this a long-term solution or will it lose its effectiveness over time?

5. Those of you that have found dexedrine to work for them, what other drugs are you taking that are also helping with your symptoms?

Feedback on any/all of these questions would be greatly appreciated - I have read most of the past posts and haven't been able to find answers to these questions. My Uro doesn't know anything about dextro - and my primary care physician isn't much better.

Thanks,
Ben

I have been considering starting dexedrine after getting another opinion from an endocrinologist who treats ideopathic edema w/ dex. & has found it also helps w/ abdominal pain, gastroparesis, IC, etc. He prescribes 10 mgs. in the am & 10 mgs. at lunchtime. I could fax you his research articles if you want to PM me w/ a fax number. If not, I will PM you a section of how it works when I get the chance. I do know that he keeps a close eye on his patients monthly to watch their BP & all.

Thanks for your response Karen - unfortunately I don't own or have access to a fax machine, but any info you can give me (or direct me to) would be very much appreciated. I hope the dexedrine works for you - let me know. Thanks!

WOW! I'm really surprised to see Dexedrine listed as an IC pain treatment here. I've been on Dexedrine Spansules (15 mg capsule) and Ritalin (5 mg) for about 15 years for ADD. If it's suppose to be helping my pain with IC flare-ups, I'd really hate to see what it's like NOT to be on it!

So for what it's worth, YES, you still have pain and IC flare-ups with Dexedrine! It will make you feel tense and anxious - so if you get stressed out and are prone to stress induced flare-ups, then this will make it worse. It is "euphoric" in the begining, but as your body gets accustomed it looses that effect.

They last about 6-8 hours, and sometimes if it's a long day, I will take 1 in the AM, 1 in the PM - BUT, I can get real irritable and be snapping a couple hours after the 2nd dose (tension & anxiety side effect). And if I experience a stressful situation, it can throw me into a flare-up.

I have been on 5 mg twice a day for over a year and half now. It has been the only med that has made my life normal. I started with that dose and have never increased the dose.
