I had something like that once. I called my doctor and they told me to fish it out of the :toilet: the next time..I was like ewhhhh but its never happend again. I did give a urine sample and it came back positive for a uti. I dont know if the tissue had anything to do with it or not but the strangest thing was thats the only time I did not have any symptoms of uti. No burning no nothing .

I have had that happen alot. Most of the time it's white but I have bloody chunks once in a while too..like you get with your period. Since I don't have a uterus anymore, I know it's not that. At first I thought it might me from my twin stones, but they told me it was bladder lining sloughing off. Ick.

It may be "pus" that was in your urine. That is one thing that you look for when testing for a UTI as well as color, odor, clarity, etc. as far as physical characteristics. Susan

Hmmm.. the only time I saw "chunks" in my pee was after my cysto/hydro, when I was passing some blood clots in my urine. BUT, when I am flaring, I often get what looks like an "oil slick" in the toilet on top of my pee :yikes:. In addition, there is often a bit of whitish stuff that comes out at the end of the urine stream. I've had urine cultured when it's like this and there is never infection. I don't know what it is, but it happens every time I flare, and stops happening in a day or two when the flare subsides.

I don't know... I guess my advice is to go have a urine culture to see if it's an infection, and mention to your doc that you see chunky stuff.

Sending hugs,

Jen

Thank You everyone for your responses!
And Thanks again Rhonda;) I wasnt sure if i would get any responses to this question,Im surprised.Thought i was the only one.
I actually did scoop it out in a urine specimen container and brought it right to my Uro 's office.
Im just waiting to hear something .
Another thing is I ve been having lower back pain that will come and go.Some pain in the perineum area:confused:
I never had this before.

ICchell,

When I was measuring for my voiding diary, i did look at my urine and held it up to the light..:dizzy:

I did notice white tissue-y and fibrous looking things in there. I had just had a culture so I knew I didn't have an infection. I just assumed it was sloughing off from inside my bladder and urethra. I was having a major flare at the time.

Only on the IC message board would we have this discussion:lmao:

LOL, Carla

I also get the white tissue in my urine and had it bioposied one time when i did a culture and it just came back as flesh. My dr told me it was just my bladder shedding. It happens a lot espically when i am in a flair.

Michelle,
This was such a good topic to start. :D I have never thought to ask y'all about the chunky stuff. I have had big chunks a few times. Mostly it was after a DMSO and my urine was always negative. We figured it was scar tissue sloughing off. Also, every time I have a flare, which is pretty much weekly still, I have very cloudy urine. My uro says it is tissue sloughing off as part of the inflammatory response. I think it is so weird. Thanks for bringing it up. I feel better too!! :hmm:

Have a great weekend!!!

It's not unusual for even a healthy bladder to do some sloughing of tissue. The big difference is that those of us with IC are much more aware of our urine and its appearance.

I know I never paid any attention at all to urine until I got IC.

:dogrun: (I just like the doggie!)

Audrey,
Its good to know that theres alot other women out there with this.
I mean I have seen little peices sloughing off in the urine but this 1 peice was about the size of a nickel and it was slimey -like.
Ewwww that just sounds nasty!
I have never had any DMSO or any other treatments. The Uro doesnt even think I have I.C. ?
He does think that I might have a bladder fistula.
Audrey, are you familiar with that diagnosis?

Geez,I feel like we have to be scientists or something and do all the research ourselves!!
Thanx,
Michelle

Michelle, yes, I agree...It does feel like we have to be scientists in order to completely understand our disease. I spend so much time reading about IC and researching IC, I feel like I have gone back to school to study IC as a profession. UGH!!

A fistula is an abnormal connection between spaces. You can get them pretty much anywhere in your body, including the bladder. They diagnosis it usually by putting dye in the known space that appears to be connected to something else. A series of x-rays are taken and you can see an abnormal streak of dye going through the fistula. To correct it, they usually tie off both ends. I don't know much about bladder fistulas, except that I have had patients who have had them. Did your doctor say why he thinks you have one? I am just curious about what triggered him to suspect a fistula.

Donna, is right. People with normal bladders do have sloughing periodically. As a nurse, I have delt with a lot of pee!!! I have seen some strange looking urine!!!
:yikes:
Especially when your body is stressed. It can even be bloody after a big surgery or bad trauma even when the bladder itself is not involved. Pretty weird, really. But my urine during a flare looks like I put those instant potatoe flakes in it or something. But, as Donna suggested, before IC, who ever spent much time examining their pee? I sure didn't.

:dogrun: I like the dog, too!!!

I sure didn't spend much time examining my pee before IC either. Since then I've examined the appearance by holding it up to the light and by leaning over the toilet and staring at it. LOL. I have also called my husband in to look... "HONEY!! Come check this out? Isn't it disgusting???"

In addition, I've thought about looking at the white slimy stuff under the microscope at work (I work in a lab) but haven't actually done this.

And of course, I, like many of us, peed for several days into a "urine hat" to measure volumes while I was doing my voiding diary. The most I ever peed out was 300 cc's, and I was in absolute agony right before it (normally I have to urinate really badly when it's about 100-200 cc's, or even less when I'm flaring). One day I dared my hubby to pee in the urine hat and he did... the jerk filled it all the way up to the 800cc mark... and then said, "Huh. I didn't even have to pee all that badly..." I WANT HIS BLADDER!!! *jealous look* My bladder doesn't even hold 800 cc under ANESTHESIA!!!

To his credit, he said he would give me his bladder if he could... :)

Plus, I've sniffed my pee a bunch of times to see if it is stinky (when I'm wondering if it's an infection or just a flare). I actually notice it smells different when I flare. Not like an infection, just weird... :)

so yes... I feel as if I am becoming obsessed with urine...

Jen :biglaugh: to be jealous of someones bladder LMAO

You know how strange this must sound to people with normal
bladders. yep ,i feel im becoming obsessed too with my urine
:hiding:
and you try to talk to normal people about this stuff and they like at ya with that look like "OKayyy!"

Audrey, the uro thinks that I might have a fistula because i mentioned to him that I had popcorn and I saw the kernel in my urine.(twice)....I dont know if the urine culture has anything to do suspecting a fistula??
Jen,
That was me the other day saying,"Check this out...Isnt this so gross?LOL :D

I totally agree... normal people could NEVER understand this type of conversation :lmao:
I am SO glad you guys are here and can understand all of this. Otherwise I would be feeling like a crazy woman right about now!!! :)

Michelle, the bladder fistula does not sound fun! I read somewhere about them when I was researching IC and happened to come across a discussion of fistulas... I can't remember where, I think it was Campbell's Urology text . Basically, yah, fistulas are improper connections... they can happen between bladder and vagina, bladder and rectum, etc. It's like a hole, and Audrey is right, they can do some kind of dye X-ray to see if there is a fistula. Also, in the book, there were a bunch of case studies, and one woman who had one complained that (oh, this is kind of gross) she was passing gas through her urethra while she urinated. Totally weird... anyway, your popcorn story reminded me of this.

Will your doc do surgery to fix it?

:)

Jen

:biglaugh: I've sniffed it too!! Yes, I do think we might be called OBSESSED!! :toilet: We can be the PEE Club!! :biglaugh:

OH goodness Michelle, that definitely is not normal to see food particles in urine. I think he might be right!! Do you have plans to investigate this further? Like soon?

Jen, Your husband sounds sweet!! :D Gosh, wouldn't it be great to pee 800cc's at one time??? My bladder likes around 90cc's but sometimes on a really good day will allow up to 240cc's but that is very rare. 800cc's? That seems so out of reach.....

04-04-2004, 01:43 AM
Hi Audrey... yeah, it would be great to be able to hold 800cc's or more in my bladder!! :) Seems out of reach for me too, though *SIGH*

My hubby is definitely sweet, though... I don't know what I would do without him most days... :)

I used to just pee and flush..when I was normal...in the good old days! Now I sit there and examine it,..yes I guess I am obsessed too...LOL.
JEN and AUDREY,
Thank you for the info on the bladder fistula...yes he is going to look into this more .. if thats what I have then I will have surgery...(hope not)...he said may have to self cath:rolleyes: Oh joy!...

You know, I've been wondering about that! After lithotripsy I was told to strain my urine for pieces of stones, and so have been using one of those hat thingies. I've noticed a lot of what looks like tissue floating in there, but when it hits the strainer it appears to be goo, mucous maybe? I've been trying to figure out what that is! Is it an IC thing? I've also had what looks like oil on top a lot. It's shiny, and sorta floats on top. I've been trying to figure out what all of that is. So far I have no diagnosis on anything, but perhaps it's worth bringing up.

Hello angel:welcome: Jen(Sarojini) was talking about that same thing...after she has a treatment it looks like oil floating around...but I havent had any kinda DMSO treatments or anything like it,just cysto/Hydro...yes,that is how it looks with me too ,like little specs of tissue ...someone else said sorta like mashed potatoe flakes, but this time there was one huge glob oof mucuosy stuff...what i did was I scoped it out and took it to my URO...just waiting for the results now...I will hopefully find out on Friday ,when I have the Uroflow test.
Angel,if i find out anything I will def.let you know.

Hi there Angel,

Yep, I get the "oil" stuff floating on my pee a lot, as ICchell mentioned. I get it during flares, and also after DMSO treatments sometimes. I don't know what it is either, but just wanted to share with you... you aren't alone :)

I've had that too. My doctor said it was the lining of my bladder sloughing off. Hmmmm, wait a minute....I'm not supposed to have a liner.

I would be sure to ask your doctor and have it checked out.

Sarojini

I've had my urine cultured and examined under the microscope when I had the oil slick... all they told me was that I did not have an infection, and they did not seem bothered by the slick... it was like they expected to see it. When I complained about it all they said was, "That happens sometimes with IC" which leads me to believe you are correct, Tilly -- it is part of the bladder lining/GAG layer.

Last week I had a urine culture before my DMSO when I did not have any oily stuff... the nurse DID comment that my urine looked "great" that day.

Oh well... anyway, I have the oily pee now, actually, so I don't know if this means I'm going to be in pain later, or what...

*sigh*

After reading these posts over the last few days, I am totally convinced that we are NOT normal people nor are we in our right minds. Now I know what causes IC...:loco: :dizzy: Or, at least, this is a symptom, at the very least. :biglaugh: Oil slicks, strings, mucus, sniffing urine, etc...I know all this is serious stuff but, let's face it...we are a weird bunch.:D

I have had white things in my urine for a few years now. does does it mean something is wrong? when I had a cath for 24 hours, I saw this big white fizzy things in my cath. It was weird.

I agree with all the posts about one becoming more observant of their urine after being diagnosed with IC. Before you would just go when you needed to, flush, and forget it--My, My, what a difference IC makes in your potty habits--I agree with Donna about liking the "doggie", too :dogrun: He is really cute!!!
