Yes, there are some medications that might help. I suggest you talk to your doctor.

Yes there are prescription meds to deal with this like Urelle or Pyridium. My experience in using the latter is when I've had a UTI.

There are also OTC meds like AZO and Uristat, and those I always keep on hand in my flare kit.

Other things I've found that helps with the burn is to increase my intake of spring water. I also keep a bottle of cool water in the restroom to rinse the urethral area with.

I feel for you! The burning/pain symptom is the one that breaks this camel's back!

Definitely take AZO (over the counter) or Pyridium Plus from your doctor. This is the only med that really takes the urethra pain away for me, including painkillers. And lots of heat/ice

You could also try drinking baking soda and water. That helps calm down a burning bladder/urethra.

I do this too. I take 1/2 tsp baking soda in a glass of water. I'm not a doctor or anything like that. I find it helps me. I think the limit on this is either once or twice a day.
All the best:cat:

I have seen some members post that they get relief from urethral burning with something called Urojet....it is lidocaine gel in a special container designed especially for squirting the lidocaine (numbing) gel in to the urethra. I have just regular 2% lidocaine liquidy gel (from Walmart pharmacy) that sometimes I apply to that area for urethral or vaginal burning. Lidocaine anything requires a prescription from dr. I have seen quite a few posts saying that members are having a hard time finding pharmacies that carry the urojets in the past year or so, so if you want to try that then probably best to call around to pharmacies in your area to see if they have them in stock or can order them before asking dr for Rx. I have squirted regular lido gel 2% into my urethra at times using a medicine dropper to get relief. Rx Pyridum and its OTC versions such as Uristat or AZO Standard have also given me pretty fast relief for urethral, vaginal and bladder burning, as does drinking lots of water.
Hope you find what helps you!

utira-c, urelle, and prosed are all very similar meds that can help. They saniztize the urine and are anti-spasmodics. They will turn your urine blue. It is something your doctor can call directly into the pharmacy for. I personally take the utira-c. I have been using it for over 2 years now. If you can get into a doctor, cantharis can help. It is a natural supplement you can find at whole foods market, or many other health food type stores. Hope this helps. Many doctors have free samples of urelle and prosed on hand, you might want to see if you can try some free before paying for a prescription. Good luck to you. Also, for me, and ice pack between the legs helps alot!

Yes, how could I forget??? Cold pack of ice or frozen veggies or a really cold can of soda placed between the legs is usually what I turn to first... and really does give me the fastest and most immediate relief...so much so that often if I get cold pack applied at first sign of burning I can get symptoms under control so well so fast that I often don't need to take any meds or apply lidocaine. I also use cold packs on my lower belly/bladder and get much relief from burning feeling in bladder. I am one who responds to cold therapy much better than heating pad. I also use cold packs on my lower back for crampy pain that is referred there from bladder.

BUt cold packs between legs can work very well, no side effects, very safe, and may reduce your need for meds, same as me. Definitely something to try if you haven't yet done so.

Ice pack between legs. Interesting idea. I recently tried the 1/2 tsp baking soda in a glass of water. I hadn't tried it for a long time. This time it caused urinary retention because there is a lot of sodium in it. However, it works for some people. And of course the usual disclaimer, I am not a doctor or medical professional and do not offer medical advice.
God bless all reading this. May you find relief for IC symptoms. I am happy to see there is a t shirt saying "I am more than IC." :welcome:

I buy those little blue ice packs, the soft ones, that you use in lunch boxes. I wrap them in a dry washcloth, and then put them into a gallon-size ziplock. You can fold the ziplock over twice. I keep these in the freezer for at night. Before I go to bed, I wrap one of them in a hand towel, and put it on my nightstand. If I can't get to sleep because of urethral burning, I reach over for my ice pack and sleep with it up high between my legs.

The next morning I take the hand towel off and put the ice pack back into the freezer.

Urethral burning is constant for me too. I take Proced DS when it gets really bad and find that it helps. I am allowed to take up to four a day if needed, but I try to only take it when the burning is really out of control. Thank you Tuckersmom for an excellent idea. I'm going to try this.

I've been doing the ice packs for about 6 or more years now. Wish I had tried it long before then. I'm 52 and started with IC at 34, although I wasn't diagnosed until about 7 years ago.
