What type of medication or treatments would treat nightime urination? I was using a muscle relaxant & pain medication and starting sleeping all night but now I'm starting to wake up again and again. I cannot stand not sleeping well.
Why in the world would I have nocturia when I don't have daytime frequency?

I take 2 mg of valium (very low dose and generic) and 10 mg of atarax (again generic) about 9:00 pm. I can barely keep my eyes open by 10:00 pm and I usually sleep until around 5:00 am. Seems my body likes the mix. Hope this helps. If you are having round the clock urgency, check into antispasmodics like ditropan xl or urelle or prosed. Those in combination with atarax may help you sleep better. Sleep medications did not work for me. Tried Ambien Cr but the urge to urinate would be so strong that the ambien just wasn't strong enough to overcome the urge. Good luck to you.
Elavil (amitryptiline) really helps me with that problem. Even a low dose taken around 7 or 8pm can make a real difference in nocturia.

Valium is too addictive plus my doctor hates the stuff. Last time I used it, I was excessively sleeping, like 20 of 24 hrs a day.
Atarax I don't think I've heard of.
Amytriptyline, ummmm I don't & won't take antidepressants. I have my reasons.
Thanks for trying to help. Maybe my doctor will dose me up with something to help me sleep better. But it's hard to believe there is anything stronger than Ambien. I am on 10mg of that plus taking Flexeril & Darvocet, and still can't sleep right.
Here is a link to an overview of medications for IC.
The top 3 (most often considered effective) oral medications for IC are
Amitriptyline, Atarax & Elmiron.
I really encourage you to look into all your options when deciding on a treatment plan.
http://www.ic-network.com/treatments/
You might also look into your habits to see if you're doing, eating or drinking something that might be causing the nocturia...

Good luck, hope you find relief soon,

this is my main issue too!! My urologist mentioned amitriptyline, but said it wouldn't be a good idea for me because I'd gain wait and it'd interfere with how I deal with pain. I'm managing my pain pretty well, with exercising, I actually have bad days (crying jags) when I don't exercise. I fall asleep well, but I'm awoken after 2-5 hours from pain and/or pressure on my bladder. I wake up right through Ambien. Years ago, an Ambien would have me out for 10 hours.
so, I guess, I too am looking for something to keep me sleeping. I've heard of antihistamines, but years ago before I knew I had IC, I took a tylenol PM and I was up all night peeing!!
I don't know if it's uncanny but I had to go off birth control at age 40 and I was also introduced to a coffee habit at the same time. My IC symptoms (which I shrugged as PMS) followed a few months later.

This noctoria started happening to me sometime last year while I had kidney stones.
I was diagnosed with IC many many years ago. I really don't know what's wrong with my bladder, I was lied to & told I had things wrong I didn't. Yet I at least know it's chronically inflammed from the biopsy's (however mild).
When this noctoria started, there was no symptoms of bladder pain, or daytime bladder problems.
1 1/2 mths ago, I'm prescribed Cipro because I'm peeing blue to green colored urine. It makes me start burning & gives me symptoms of a urinary tract infection. I have had symptoms recur & went on a diff antibiotic recently, burned the entire time I took it, so I only took it 4 days of 10, & finally got better. My bladder hasn't stopped hurting since the whole Cipro deal. It started getting somewhat better until I took the Macrobid. Now it's really tender/sore. Does it seem to make my pain worse, it sure doesn't help anything. But this pain in my sides & this nocturia was occuring way before these bladder problems started.
I did get see my gastroenterologist. I can't eat without hurting now. I started waking up belching/indigestion/heartburn attacks. I am taking 2 different acid medications & Mylanta, I was feeling pretty good until late this evening, now my bladder + both kidneys + both ureters (into my hips) feel like they are in total H_LL.
I understand why my stomach hurts. I can even understand why my bladder is aggitated, UTI's, and it really hates my prescription meds, I've had quite a few make my bladder go insane.
But I do not understand why my ureters/kidneys hurt like this. There's no way my bladder is causing that problem, because my bladder wasn't even bothering me the majority of the time I've had this problem.
God this just makes me want to screem at the top of my lungs. I guess I mind as well get used to it.

If my doctor gives me anything that helps, I will be sure to let you know. I have taken plenty of antihistamines because I've had alot of nasal problems before I had surgery on my nose, & they did not make me sleepy. Maybe I've been going to bed too early making me unable to sleep as well. Tonite is the latest I've been up for awhile. I am usually in bed by 6:00-8:00 pm. I've also had my reflux waking me up & shoulder/neck pain disturbing my sleep, so it's becoming a nightmare trying to rest. I already have sleep disordered breathing, I'm tired enough as is. I think I'd settle for some Morphine. The pain is even worse than the lack of sleep.

ambien cr is better then regular ambien . It keeps you asleep longer. Flexeril is strong. Darvocet is a mild pain medication. There are stronger pain meds then darvocet. You can't sleep with ambien and flexeril and darvocet. You need to see your md he needs to make some changes on meds possibly and medication dosages possibley

I wish I could just quit taking ALL medications.... Darn, but I am hooked.
I have started burning bad again, mystery solved to why I hurt so bad right now.
I am going to see my doctor, but not until 3-2.
I stopped taking Flexeril & Darvocet at bedtime the other night. I had too much pain shooting through me & tingling everywhere, it has to be from those medications, 3 at once, probably not smart
I haven't heard of the ambien cr, but I'll ask about it. I also have to get something for this pain to control it. I'm getting to the point, I'm breaking down and crying over it, it's just too much.

Hi
I don't mean to be mean, but as alot of people have told you, following the diet can help with all of these complaints.
Also you can have a pain in one place but feel it is another part of your anatomy.
Yes I too wonder why I first got the pain in my kidneys and uraters, and then in my bladder, I have asked Dr.s, but the thing to keep in mind everyone expirences IC in different ways.
Sleep is a big thing for alot of IC sufferers, with the pain, and pressure, and the need to go at night, it is not condusive for sleep.

PS> from what I know pain meds (no matter how strong) and muscle relaxers (regardless the brand) are not meant to be used as sleep aids. Yes, when first taking them they may have initial VERY sedative side effects and put one to sleep very fast....but when taken regularly that sedative effect can quickly wear off....within a week many times. Does not mean necessarily that a sleep med such as ambien or the others is necessary...the main thing it seems is that symptoms are under control enough so that they DON"T keep you awake, with or without a sleep med. So if adequate and appropriate meds are found to work for your symptoms, then a sleep aid most likely will not be necessary.

my sleep aid is very necessary. my brain won't shut down when i sleep. i cannot sleep any whatsover without ambien. it's like someone who drank caffeine all day, and then can't sleep, except I didn't have the caffiene.

So you hurt in your sides from your bladder? I am actually feeling urine in my sides. It's weird. I'd feel absolutely stupid telling my doctor that.
The food I eat isn't bad for me. I mostly eat salads for lunch/dinner. Occassionally eat cereal or eggs/bacon for breakfast. I don't have a bad diet. If I crave something sweet, I just eat a granola bar. I'm not the type of person who piles up on junk food.
I slept better last night after going to bed later but I still found myself waking up some.
I swore that food did not affect my IC. But I believe that this was my belief because my flaring was so bad for 6 weeks that I couldn't tell. Now that my pain is more or less in my bladder and sometimes my back, I have been able to distinguish mayonaise as a huge factor for pain, and coffee for spasms. (I'm down to two sips in the morning). My IC symptoms appeared when I went off bcp and started drinking coffee the same year. I think the coffee was recreating that affect of racing heart that the bcp was doing.

Well I know foods can be bothersome. Last time I drank orange juice, it burned my stomach something awful and my gastroenterologist told me I can't drink it because of my acid problems. I never had problems with it before though, I believe I have gastritis that's in a flare. I also have other foods I have to completely stay away from. They no doubt, make me worse. If I come across something like that, then I stay away from it. I have had a few things that drive my bladder MAD I have to avoid. Same thing goes for my stomach issues.

I know what you mean about your brain not shutting down.
maybe not a sleep aid, but something that calms you down. I take half a tablet of clorazepam at night and just when I think "this isn't going to work...I zonk out". Also, I can't be on the computer or doing work after supper hours. Reading is a good relaxer, I just have to make sure it's "mindless" reading, or I'm trying to solve problems

I actually had a test showing my brain doesn't shut down in my sleep. But yes, I also have that problem where I will lay in bed and just think about one thing or another and can't get my mind to rest before trying to go to sleep. I've tried different sleep aids, Ambien is the only one for me.

Regarding sleep aids, my body acts the total opposite on regular Ambien and Ambien CR. I have been on some sort of sleep aid for a number of years. Like Briza said, pain meds only work so long (for me they never put me to sleep) and my brain doesn't shut down either. I have played so many mind games that I have read about (sort of like "counting sheep" and a handful of times it has worked, but normally I find myself going from one thing in my head to another. Anyway, Snowgirl has very valid points, which I am sure are true for alot of people, but for me, if I take Ambien CR, I always wake up and that is when I sleepwalk. I was believable enough at times that it took a while for my family to realize it. I have done many things during those incidences, even bleached my carpet in several rooms thinking I was cleaning my carpet. I could go on and on with my Ambien CR stories. That was a very expensive sleepwalk that night. For several years I went between Rozerom and at the moment can't think of the other one, but it's a "newer" med. My doctor is very aware that my body gets very used to the med, so we switch back and forth. I went back on regular Ambien just to give it a try, plus the expense of the other 2. For about 3 months now, it works well on me with the exception of nights that my pain meds aren't working. I only require around 3 to 4 hours of sleep in order to function, so when I am at my "normal", I am grateful for those few hours. There are times I can even half a 10 mg and take the other half when I wake up and if I am lucky will get a couple extra hours when my bladder is behaving.

It sounds like you've gotten alot of information regarding what others have tryed and worked for them. Of course, we are all different.
So it wouldn't hurt to take a print-out of this thread to your appointment. Especially if something someone has tryed might sound like a plan for you to try.
Your physician will definitely know whether it's right for your system. Especially if you have gastro issues as well.
I sure hope they figure out a regime for your sleeptime. If I lose alot of sleep.....boy am I crabby! Hang in there and hopefully it will all work out.:)

LOL.
Yes, the forum is extremely helpful.
My reflux and Irritable bowel are both getting much better. I'm taking 3 different acid medications plus a natural digestive pill, it's REALLY helping. I didn't have a clue until recently that my acid disease was playing a part in my Irritable bowel problems, but the acid problems somehow cause my bowels to work too fast, and in turn, causing really bad pain & cramps.
My infection is getting a little better, ps my bladder isn't hurting quite so bad, when I am not burning as much. I'm going to look into some natural remedies, if anything works, I'll let you all know. I am also going to insist my doctor put me on Elmiron next month.
My muscular pain, well one problem obviously is going to bed too early, and laying in bed way longer than I should be. Today I am going to go to GNC and try some of that whey protein shakes and see if that can get me moving better in the mornings. I am one of those people that cannot function in the morning. My afternoons aren't too bad. But by 6:00 pm I'm totally done for.
I'm getting ready to start going back to college, and tackling homeschooling one of my kids, I can't be letting this stuff drag me down. I read online the whey protein is a really good energy booster. I guess we'll see.
And I'll get my sleep problems under control one way or the other. Thanks for being so helpful! You guys are great.

T83 oH no remember my ambien cr stories. I would sleep then get up. Get on internet and buy all kinds of things from QVC, bath and body. Days later UPS would arrive with packages and I was like what did I buy on ambien cr now. My credit card was the biggest ever. Called people don't remember. Emailed people don't remember. Never cooked or drove thank heavens. I take it about once every 5 months for 5 days when I tell my md I cant' stand no sleep anymore. Vn

I it my personal own feeling it was unsafe for me. I have heard of stories like mine and claredele. My therapist has 2 pt's that drove on ambien and one hit a pole. It is my also opinion give it time and there will be some huge law suit against the makers of ambien when someone really does something bad or terrrible.................. remember the Halcion days and lawsuit? Well you should have enough sense, not to take Ambien, and then go on a joyride. That's as bad as drinking/driving.
It's amazing how a person can get up from their sleep, carry on a semi-normal conversation, with their eyes wide open, and never be awake. I've never experienced it but I've seen it happen. It's freeky.
It's probably just because of the pain (it's kind of coming and going right now), but I feel a never ending urge to pee when I am laying down, I'm okay when up out of bed, but not otherwise. I go pee and still feel like I need to go really bad. Of course, only when I am trying to sleep. I was able to drift off to sleep a thousand times last night but most of the time I just lay there feeling this. This has to be the longest UTI I have ever had. When it goes away, that pain better go with it.
What I am baffled by is feeling urine in my side just as I do my bladder when it gets full. Even when I don't feel any urine in my bladder, I can feel it in my sides. Am I crazy or what? I think I must be.
angel451
02-21-2009, 06:33 AM
Why I didn't think of this before, but where I am having trouble with my urine stream, before doing after, and in fact know I don't get it all out, could be the very reason why my insides feel like they could just explode. That is so easily treatable.

Some people have problems with medications --- and might even get in a car and drive without realizing it --- I guess it's kind of like sleepwalking; some have no knowledge that they have done it.

Hello everyone
:smile tee What has worked for me is taking 2 Elavil pills before bed and also avoid any drink or food after 3 in the afternoon. Though we have limited foods and drink that we ICers can consume :toilet: I have been very successful with this. It is a low dose of Elavil, and I still get up to during the night, but I fall right back to sleep. I'm aware of some ICers that do not want to take a anti-depressant, but is a very low dose and if it helps you get some zzzz's at night, that is very important for daily function and our bodies need the rest. It affects so many problems people may have if we cannot let our bodies rest. Also I know it may cause people to gain weight, but I have actually have lost the weight! Probably because I am getting the required sleep :smile tee Think Positive!!! :smile tee

Glad to hear you have found something that works for you, I would not be able to not drink from 3 pm till next am, I am thirsty all the time. I even drink water during the night or I am too thirsty to go back to sleep. I have found that taking the Hydroxizine at night helps me, I still get up to pee a couple of times a night but it helpped alot with the constant feeling of needing to go, and cut down the number of times I need to get up to go.
The rest of the people posting inthis thread:
As a child I did get up at night and do things, ussally things that were on my mind, and this was with no meds, sleep is such a different thing for everyone.
Everyone reacts differently to meds this is why we need to have good communication with our Dr.'s and why for IC it seems to be a different combo of meds that work for each person.

Nocturia was one of my worst symptoms. I would get up about every hour and a half to pee, and I thought it was all from my bladder.
Here is what helped me: Elmiron one three times a day, the last one just before bed, about 5 mg of Atarax at bedtime, and 1/2 of a 10 mg regular Ambien. I also had pelvic floor therapy for the bladder spasms that were waking me up all the time. This was referred spasm from pelvic floor and was not coming from the bladder, the bladder was the victum, not the cause. I also had a sleep study and found out I had sleep apnea and they gave me CPAP machine. I get up once to pee, usually about 3:00 AM and can sleep for four hours before, and 4 hours after I wake up to pee at 3:00 AM on most nights. Taking Atarax at night helps keep any allergic bladder irritants that might form down, and makes you sleepy anyway.

Hey Thanks Mothergoose! That is a very nice compliment since I will be 40 in two months. It's only a number! Just reading what I posted, I meant to say I try to avoid anything with CAFFEINE in it after 3 in the afternoon. Even though we ICers have a hard time with caffeine, I am able to drink coffee now and then. Have a great day! Think Positive!

I think caffeine could irritate anyone. I fight with my daughter's dad all of the time to not give her that stuff, he even started buying her caffeine gum, what idiot buys a child caffeine gum to hype them up? She usually develops symptoms of frequency and burning after coming home from his house. Caffeine also relaxes the LES, increasing the risk of acid reflux. And she suffers every day from reflux, the indigestion, puke coming up your esophagus, and the whole 10 yards of abdominal pain.
She won't let her doctors do any tests on her that would be just even a hair of being painful. No bloodwork. Can't even get her to take medications unless it's a really tiny pill. And even then, she will not take them every day.
Sorry, but I think her dad ought to be a bit more concerned about her overall health than that. Reflux untreated can eventually erode away your esophagus. When the acute inflammation goes chronic, you then become at a higher risk for cancer, and then by that point, that it's so bad that it becomes chronic inflammation, your likely going to be suffering with that for the rest of your life. I've already had the abnormal tissue changes and I've only had the reflux for 7 years. My daughter has had it for at least a year. But unlike me, she will not let a gastroenterologist do an endoscopy to see what type of damage the reflux may be causing, so we have no way of knowing how bad this is affecting her.
I cannot contribute my reflux to caffeine but I know it's why my daughter is having problems. How people even stand to drink that stuff, it's beyond me. It may give you a short term boost of energy but does it even matter when your laying in bed all night wide awake, eventually your going to crash and feel worse than you did the start with.
I have found that as long as I take a duretic, I can sleep just fine. Otherwise all that pain in my urinary tract just comes flooding back. I don't understand it, because after the first two days of taking these pills, I was able to pee fine. But everytime I quit taking them, the pain comes back.

I think I must be.
they should have enough sense not to drive while on ambien. Obviosly, you
have not read the drug insert or any side effects of ambien. Ambiend causes amensia- people dont know they are driving, dont know they are calling friend or emails, buying things and not remembering . Amnesia is number one side effect of ambien. Now do you think Claredele actually knew she was cleaning her carpet with bleach no it's the amnesic effect of ambien. Someone on her their family took video of them doing things after they were asleep got up and did some of these ambien unsafe things. Famous senator took ambine and sleepwalked then drove and crash. It' only matter of time and THERE WILL be a lawsuit against ambien for some tragic event . VN

What type of medication or treatments would treat nightime urination? I was using a muscle relaxant & pain medication and starting sleeping all night but now I'm starting to wake up again and again. I cannot stand not sleeping well.
Why in the world would I have nocturia when I don't have daytime frequency?
that's an excellent question and if urologist could figure that one question out alot of us would have improved quality of life and feel better at work the next day. Perhaps even some people on disability could work a little again.
Most icer's have both but nightime is acclerated- urologists try with medications to help the nocturia process but no scientific reason why it exists I do believe- if their is someone please speak up. If there was a cure for nocturia do you know how many lives of those with IC would be changed. I for one would stand on a mountain a praise the Lord for the sleep and the blessing. I could possibly return to work . Vn

possibility your body got used to that dosage of muscle relaxant and pain med every night- need to consult with your md and tell him that. See what he says and comes up with. He knows the answers. Vn

But unlike me, she will not let a gastroenterologist do an endoscopy to see what type of damage the reflux may be causing, so we have no way of knowing how bad this is affecting her.

interesting a diuretic helps you sleep at night. I have never heard of this but it's true for you wow. I can't even take a blood pressure pill with diuretic in it. I have very , very small bladder capacity. Perhaps your bladder can tolerate the water pill as you bladder capacitiy is bigger or average. You can still have IC even with big or normal bladder capacities. VN
