Hi.....I just wanted to let everyone know that after having no success with pyridium and minimal success with urelle i think i have finally found what works for me. I was taking urelle but it was costing me 75$ a persciption which is just waaayyyy rediculous so the doctor gave me a bunch of samples of Utira-C and UTA and after trying them both out i LOVE the UTA!!! It works so much better than all of the other ones i have tried. Not really sure why becasue they all seem to have about the same stuff in them . But i just called my uro and they are calling me in a UTA perscription today. Im just crossing my fingers that this one is cheaper then the others! Anyways....if you are not having much success with the other durgs give UTA a try!

hi
I am glad you found something that works for you:smile tee! I take pyridium here and there with much help but just recently learned about the med UTA...and that is possibly safer for longterm regular use than pyridium (which I use very conservitavely because of warnings for longterm regular RTC use). Please post how much you have to pay for UTA, if you don't mind....retail or Rx insurance....I don't have insurance right now but:pray::pray::pray:hopefully that will be changing in the near future. But if you could post about how much you pay whether w/ or w/out insurance would be very much appreciated and the mg you were prescribed and if there is a generic available or only the brand name UTA. Thx!
Very happy for you...always great when we find something that works well for us, so thx for sharing!

I believe that yes, most drs are mostly familiar with just Rxing for symptom relief it along w/ an antibiotic for UTIs...but it seems many here use these pee blue meds for IC symptom relief...and for those who are prone to UTIs may get some help from the antiseptic/antibacterial in the pee blue meds to help prevent infection. But I don't believe that the antiseptic/antibacterial properties are meant to CURE an infection....an antibiotic is needed to do that....but possibly the antiseptic/antibacterial in these meds may help in PREVENTING infection. But not all that take the pee blue meds that have this antiseptic/antibacterial are prone to UTIs...it is just that these class of meds seem to be safer for longterm regular use than Pyridium, and sometimes may be better tolerated or give better relief than Pyridium.
The pee blue meds have several other ingredients that help with a variety of symptoms for those with IC, not only the antiseptic/antibacterial part....spasms, pain, burning, frequency, urgency, pressure. If you take a look at the first two threads that Goldy made in this new forum you will read what the different ingredients are in each of these pee blue or pee orange meds are, and each ingredient helps treat a different symptom...so very helpful for many who suffer from IC, whether they are prone to UTIs or not. Tho the pee blue meds DO have antiseptic properties, their other ingredients can relieve many of the symptoms that are common to IC, and may be safer to take on a longterm, RTC, regular basis than the pee orange meds such as Pyridium, Uristat, and Azo Standard. Hope this helps!

That's a perspective I haven't heard before--that the antiseptic ingredients in the UTAs are somehow..what? harmful? if one does NOT have a UTI. My doctor has never said anything like this, and is fine with the way I use my Urelle: 3 or 4 x per day when I am flaring, and then gradually reduce the amount as I start to feel better.
There is another thread about the use of Hyoscyamine only, the anti-spasmodic ingredient in the UTAs (Urelle, Prosed, Utira-c, Uta, etc.) vs. taking a UTA that includes the antispetics methemamine and methylene blue. Rose, perhaps your doctor might prescribe Hyoscyamine for you. According to Donna it's relatively inexpensive.
It's possible that those of us who are not prone to UTIs might do fine without the antiseptic component. However, Phenylsalycilate, which is another active ingredient in all the UTAs, has some useful properties: it is an analgesic and anti-inflammatory similar to aspirin, and it is also an antipyretic, which means it can bring down body temperature (the way aspirin can, I suppose.) Maybe it even has a cooling effect on a burning bladder!

I am not prone to UTIs so yes, one thing that I have been thinking about is if I really want an antiseptic/antibacterial property in my bladder ??since my bladder flora seems to be just fine the way it is and don't want to mess with that!!! But yes, I am going to ask my gyn for a small Rx of just the hyoscyamine (antispasmodic) to see how that works for me since bladder spasms seem to be what has been keeping me up these nights of late...not pain...but more the pressure and urgency feeling that I know spasms can cause me. So I would like to try the hyoscyamine alone to see if it will stop the spasms or prevent them from starting and thus prevent the spasms from progressing to pressure, urgency, always aware of my bladder feeling that I seem to notice these days only when I lie down to go to sleep...and then I cannot sleep. Pyridium works great for me, but I would like to try hyoscyamine alone and see if that works and would be happy if it does...meaning no more orange pee and I could wear my preferred white cotton undies instead of my usual BASIC BLACK....black gets very unsexy if you have to wear it everyday to not notice orange (or blue) stains!! :lmao: Anyway, first thing tomorrow morning I am going to call gyn to ask for a script for just 30 10 mg tabs of hyoscyamine and see how that goes before I invest more money in a script for something that may or may not work. Will keep y'all posted if I get script and how it works for me!!

UTA is a little expensive. I currently have no insurance, but bought a Walgreen's discount card . My prescription is for 120 pills per month and cost $135.00 with the discount.

Hey girls....to answer alot of the questions i heard on here....I have IC but do not suffer from frequent UTI's and i have been on urelle and then switched to UTA for 4 months now. As far as i know alot of people take the pee blue meds becasue they can be taken more long term and since IC is a long term illness it works better. Also, my UTA cost me 64.00 for 60 pills. Not cheap but still like 10$ less then what urelle was costing me. Also, UTA is brand name and unfortunatly there is not a generic. Found t hat out today after calling my insurance company. Hope this helps!

I googled it as "Uta medication" and came up with several sites. As far as I can tell it is a brand name and is supplied by Stewart-Jackson Pharmacal. It doesn't help that they call it Uta because it's a UTA. Yech.

Yes it is a brand name...it stands for the brand name Urinary Tract Antiseptic...if you google that you will find the home page for the med that is brand name UTA...or do an advanced search of my posts here on ICN and use keyword UTA and choose search threads only and that will pull up a thread specifically about UTA as well as the other pee blue and pee orange meds.
Hope this helps...if you can't find that thread let me know and I can track it down and post a link to it.
Take care..
according to webmd, UTA is the generic form of Urelle. I don't know if thats true or not, but the ingredients listed are exactly the same as in Urelle. FWIW.

I too saw that info about Uta on Webmd, but it contradicts info on other sites. I really don't believe that there is any generic drug for Urelle, Prosed, Uta or Utira-c. Some plans (like mine) have only two prices for drugs: generic and non-generic prices. It would cost me the same for any of these drugs. It costs me $25 less for any generic drug. All plans are different, and it sounds like, according to those are taking Uta or Utira-c, that these two drugs are simply a bit cheaper, so if you have a plan that covers individual meds according to the actual costs of the drug--or if you don't have insurance for drugs--you may find them to be a better deal.

Here is link to homepage of the med w/ brand name UTA:
http://www.sjpharma.com/uta/UTA_Bro_web.pdf
This UTA homepage shows the active ingredients AND the exact amount of each.
It also shows the inactive ingredients.
It is not a sales site...it is simply the homepage for this particular med.

I feel like I've been dipped in methylene blue and deposited on another planet. If anyone would have told me two years ago that I would become obsessed with a medicine that turned my pee blue, ruined my underwear and made my patient husband swear into his pretty white toilet bowl, I would have thought they were insane.
That home page is pretty interesting. Uta has 50 percent more methenamine than any of the other pee-blue meds. Other than the amount of that one antiseptic ingredient it is identical to Utira-c. Whoever among you have been jumping up and down about Uta, perhaps your bladders really like that stuff! Bladder catnip!

I swear urelle and prosed make me tired if I have more than one dose in a day. I don't know which ingredient would be causing this, but has any of you had this problem and found one that does NOT cause this SE? Also, does the hycosamine only cause tiredness?
Thanks in advance!

Emmy1151-
Thank you tons for posting about the Uta. I also have no help from pyridium so I asked by urologist to write a script for Uta and have been taking it for not quite 2 weeks now and I really think it gives me some relief. I would never have knwon about this med if you didn't post it, so thanks!!
