Has anyone tried Kava? I saw it at Albertson's & Safeway for $10 a jar. According to the label it's real coffee, but 90% of the acid has been removed.
?!!

Yes, I use 2 heaping tsp. every a.m. in 12 oz. of spring water. Then I dump in a bunch of Nestles Irish Cream creamer. Tastes like a latte that way. It's my favorite 10 mins. of the day :)

In Oregon we can buy Kava at almost any market. It doesn't bother my IC, but I have found some low acid coffee beans so I grind those and have my fresh coffee in he morning. I put cream in mine and add some white chocolate syrup (sweetened with Splenda).

Same here, got the low-acid, de-caf beans. I also have a jar of instant Kava, but it's not de-caf. Does anyone know if they make a Kava-decaf? I think the caffeine bothers me as much as the acid.

There's no decaf. Kava to my knowledge. I even called the company several years ago. I can tolerate 2 heaping tsps./day. The caffeine still bothers me for a few hours but I just pay the price. Can't give up everything in life for this illness so this one I'm willing to just pay the piper.

My preferred morning drink is green or black tea but since both cause extreme pain, I was thrilled to discover Kava deacidified. Since regular coffee also causes me extreme pain, whatever mild irritation may come as a result of the caffeine in Kava is tolerable--I'm not sure about whether it has an effect or not, since so many things irritate my bladder I can't eliminate them all and it is often hard to pinpoint the exact sources of irritation. I buffer the coffee further by mixing with Silk unsweetened soy milk, and then sweeten with stevia. I tolerate both unsweetened soy milk (only the Silk brand, however) and stevia very well.

I've been drinking Kava coffee for years and it doesn't seem to irritate my bladder. Lately the only store that carries it is Walmart and they are out of it now. I've grown to like the taste as well, and drinking regular coffee (I know....that forbidden stuff) hurts and doesn't taste as well.

There are some coffee choices in the ICN Shop. If you can tolerate caffeine and you have a Trader Joe's in your area, they carry low acid coffee beans. I do okay with one cup a day of TJ's.

Found Kava at my local Wegmans and used 2 teaspoons in 6oz. of water with Coffee Mate and it didn't bother my IC a bit.

Update- many years later!!! It did flare my IC. I've now tried almost every type of decaf low acid coffee available & they all irritate. What I do now is hot steamed milk with Pero (herbal coffee substitute) and sugar. Or when traveling, I get a hot steamed milk at a cafe and add raw sugar to it.
