One thing keeping me from trying for a third child is having to get off my meds. I take Elmiron, Atarax and Darvocet. What are we allowed to take in pregnancy? I'm so afraid of stopping them. To be honest, I really need MORE pain meds. The Darvocet just doesn't cut it when it's a bad flare day. Thanks for any info!

There really isn't alot of info about pregnancy and any medication. Usually anecdotal info only.
I wonder if the company that makes elmiron has a pregnancy database? You could contact them and ask about this. If they don't have one, they should start one b/c it seems there is mostly women with IC and are taking elmiron.
As far as pain meds, I do know that they give women percocet after delivery if they have a lot of pain- or had a lot of stiches. They do not tell these women not to breast feed. But as far as during pregnancy, I don't know.
I would talk to your uro and gyno about this.
If you find anything out, please post. I am really interested in this topic as well. I hope to have children in the next couple of years.

I know women who have been put on percocet for things like psyatica (sp?) while they were pregnant.
It has a warning label on my vicodin bottle. Vicodin and pregnancy don't mix. I'm on paxil and as there is no evidence that it hurts the baby, and I need it to keep from going insane, I'm thinking I may keep risking the 10mgs a day.
Let me know if you hear anything about Elmiron.

I do know that there is no evidence of damage from SSRI's like paxil, prozac, celexa, etc.
I looked elmiron up in the Physician's Desk Reference and it is pregnancy category B:which means "no evidence of risk in humans"... that's good.
Atarax doesn't have a rating, but says it is contraindicated in early pregancy.
Darvocet doesn't have a rating either, it says the baby could have withdrawal symptoms (when it's born?). it says it is the physician's judgement on whether or not to prescibe to pregnant women.
Wish there was more info...

Wow! Thanks for the info, guys. I don't know what I'd do without my IC friends <img src="graemlins/grouphug.gif" border="0" alt="[grouphug]" />
I'm definitely going to check into the drugs w/ my doctors. It's such a scary thing. I was blessed to have my other two before IC(my son was 2 months when my symptoms began). I'll post when I find out anything.

Wow, Alyson. My youngest son was 1 month old when my symptoms started. Did you have a c-section?

Hi all:
Vicodin is Class B, supposedly OK during pregnancy.

Kim,
No, I didn't have a C-section! I had both my kids naturally, so I can't blame the surgery!

Hi Alyson,
Just wanted to let you know I took Elmiron throught my entire pregnancy and gave birth to a healthy 8lb, 70z baby boy on 8/6/02. discussed it w/ my doc before and again once I got pregnant and we mutually agreed to keep me on the Elmiron to avoid me going into big time flares. I usually take 100 mg 3 times a day. Tried to limit it to 100 mg 2 times a day or nothing when and if I could but most of the time I had to stick to the 100 mg 3 times a day. Funny thing is after the pregnancy I didn't need it for an entire month before I started to flare again. Elmiron was the only drug I took throughout my pregnancy. Don't know how it would affect anything (or if it would) if I have another baby but this time at least I got lucky and the baby is beautiful and healthy. Good luck to you. Ali

Hello:
I was looking for imformation about Vicodin yesterday on the web. Yvonne
http://www.healthsquare.com/rx/vicodin.htm
The effects of Vicodin in pregnancy have not been adequately studied. Do not take this drug if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant unless you are directed to do so by your doctor. Drug dependence occurs in newborns when the mother has taken this drug regularly prior to delivery.
