I am really getting discouraged with this flare I have been having for almost a month now. I know it's not a uti. I had been feeling almost close to normal for the last few days, but then this afternoon everything started up again. I had been drinking tons of water since all this started, but then the last few days I may have gotten over confident and had a few Diet Cokes. I didn't think it would be a big deal because I have always drank them before with no problems.(stupid I know). It's just so frustrating when you finally think you may be over the flare nightmare, and then out of nowhere you're in pain again. Is it possible to have a certain food cause a flare now after years of it not?

To answer your question in one word, YES.

I never drank much diet coke or any other soda before IC but I DID like an occasional diet coke...very seldomly, tho...at most 3 a month. So sodas were not hard at all for me to give up completely when I got IC and later when I found out about the IC diet.

I had a 10 month remission in 2008 and actually found myself watching my diet as closely if not more closely than when I was having symptoms. I managed to stay in this remission for that long by sticking to my diet only(which is not too restricted but the triggers I do have can cause me some serious pain and burning) ...no meds needed during that remission. But yes, I will say maybe 3 times in those 10 months I ate something that I knew was a trigger for me and symptoms came on fast and strong...luckily just one dose of pyridium each time was enough for me to stop the symptoms within a few hours.

Even tho I don't drink or really even care for sodas, I do like an occasional rootbeer with lots of ice. Rootbeer seems to be one soda that many IC patients can tolerate. For me it is usually just a once a month deal when I am having PMS symptoms and craving something sweet, and sweet things I don't care for much at all. But a rootbeer with lots of ice I can tolerate and sometimes NEED lol during that PMS time.

So maybe rootbeer is something you could try...but still I would not recommend it while flaring or having symptoms, and even if you are feeling just fine, not to over do it. Maybe one here and there, but probably not best to drink more than one a day, and definitely not everyday. Also, seems most ICers better tolerate the regular rootbeer, not the diet kind. Hope this helps!:flower:

It's absolutely possible to develop a sensitivity to something that's not been a problem before. That said, even a tiny drink of diet coke would cause me to flare. I am not even tempted to try it.

as odd as it sounds....
just as the sensitivity to "normally ok foods" comes....it also goes...just as mysteriously.

happens to me w/ my homemade chicken soup

for a while there..it bothered me
then...it didnt bother me....
now..it bothers me again..

i dont know what gives.

i thought it was the type of chicken...or bullion....
steriods in the chicken??

or maybe some days my bladder does better than other days.

dont know
but dont worry....it seems to come and go
