My husband wants to try a local Greek restaurant. I have no idea what kind of food that is. I have never eaten it. Does anyone know if there is anything that is IC safe?
Thanks,
Maryann

There should be some really good Greek foods to try. Most important I think is to avoid anything pickled or vinegar or marinated, which many of their meats and veggies are. I love Greek food and I wish I could tell you the names of things I think are safe to eat but well, I don't speak Greek, I just recognize it on the menu what I like and what I believe is safe for me to eat. I know that is not of much help, sorry! but Greek food is not spicy so you shouldn't have to worry about that, but ask about what is marinated, pickled, or contains vinegar...those would be my biggest concerns.

i love greek food. you are usually safe with calamari rings, fish etc. becareful with the meats, most are marinated and have lots of spices on it and they sometimes also squeeze lemon juice on the meat also. stay away from the dips. you are better off asking the restaurant before hand on how they prepare their meats.

meat, bread and vegetables are usually safe; beware Fro the lemon, they use it everywhere.
Best is to ask the waiter or manager to put only olive oil on your dish.
Yummy!

also, I can tolerate hummus, the sauce, but there is lemon inside.

Most of the salads and apps will have some lemon in them, but you might find a fried calamari app or entree that would just have a wedge of lemon on the side. Tsatsiki (sp?) is a cucumber-yogurt dip and also may have lemon. Taramasalata is a pink dip made from fish roe, bread and lemon juice. That and a greek salad was my favorite thing when I was in Greece, pre-IC. Lentil dishes will also often have tomatoes. Many of the composite dishes or casseroles like moussaka will have tomatoes. If you stick to grilled fish or a simple lamb dish you should be okay. You might find a shish-ka-bob type dish that looks plain enough, but I agree with a poster above that marinades for meats can contain lemon or vinegar and a variety of pungent spices. Can you tolerate feta cheese? Perhaps if they are willing they will make you a Greek salad w/no tomato and only olive oil. I love Greek food, but I haven't had it in a long time.
