Just curious if the only way to treat IC with Cytotec is by instillation? I'm wondering if anyone has used the oral form of it for IC?

Hi Charisse....
First of all, congratulations on the birth of your baby:)......
I take Cytotec orally......Have been on it for nearly 6 months and feel it works for me....I also take Elmiron as well......
Dr Silbar(who is listed as an IC doctor on this board)mentioned to me about taking Cytotec....I actually know him through work, but he is not my urologist because I live quite a distance from the hospital where I work and my husband`s insurance would not cover if I saw Dr Silbar......He told me several months ago that is what he is prescribing for IC patients now....but I have not seen him for awhile due to my work schedule(work weekends and he works about every 5th weekend) and being off from work due to surgery......
Side effects include: Diarrhea(not all the time), a sensation of feeling hungry and I have noticed that has tapered off too......
I am 46 and had a total abdominal hysterectomy with ovaries and tubes removed this past summer so the side effect regarding pregnancy is not an issue with me.......
Hope this helps......
Bless, Sharon

Thanks Sharon. My labor was induced with cytotec actually but they place the pill against your cervix to induce. I realize you cannot get pregnant when taking it so I would make sure to have a solid form of birth control in place before taking it. Do you feel it's worked well for you?

Yes Charisse,
I feel Cytotec has worked well for me....I noticed a difference within a day or two upon taking it......
I take 100mg tablet x2 twice a day....bkfast and supper.....
I feel both Cytotec and Elmiron work for me......
An example, I ate spaghetti with tomato sauce for supper this eveing and I have not had any IC symptoms flare up which is something I could not eat at all before.....I use to have bad frequency and urgency and I always had that feeling of having to urinate.....I don`t have that feeling at all.....
Bless,Sharon

One more thing I forgot to mention....you cannot take any NSAID`s while on Cytotec...they interfere with the postagladin production......

Hey There,
I have not been on here in awhile, but I did Cytotec instills with Heparin and Lidocaine for a few months. I am doing so well now that the Cleveland Clinic has released me unless I have anymore problems. We are considering pregnancy now because it has been enough time since stopping the Cytotec.
