As the holidays approach I am thinking about all the socials I will attend and how nice it would be to have a glass of white wine. Since I have been on Elmiron I have been able to put back into my diet some of the foods that use to be on the NO list for me. I am curious but afraid to try alcohol. I miss my wine! I used to enjoy a glass of white wine before IC came into my life. I have tried vodka and water and do okay with that but I am (was) a wine lover.
Is there a white wine that any of you do well with or should I just realize I have to give it up forever! I thought I heard about a low acid white wine but can't remember where I read that.
Thanks!

I have been able to have a glass of organic wine. I buy it at a health food store. It is sufite free. I also can drink a vodka martini.

To my amazement, I can have a glass of better white wine with no problem as long as I take a couple of prelief and not do it too often. I was terrified to try it at first, but after a year on Elmiron I gave it a shot-with no problems!!!!!
Good luck.

Me too! I know that not all ICers can tolerate alcohol, but I have found a few things I can have without problems, and this is one of them.
The owner of this site, Jill Osborne, would be a great one to ask about this, because I know that her family actually owns some vineyards in California. You might want to shoot her a PM and ask her if they make anything, (or if she knows of a low-acid wine), if she doesnt see this thread.
Best wishes,

There are low-acid wines available. I cant think of any by name right off hand though as I'm not sensitive to alcohol other than some increased frequency. If you have a wine shop close by go in and ask the sommelier--s/he would be able to provide info and order you a bottle if s/he doesnt keep it in stock.

I can have one small glass of white dessert wine if I haven't had anything else that might be a problem. I do take Prelief first.

This is my own experience & my own theory but for me, finding wine that is low in tannin is what makes the difference. If I go for fruity wines (beaujolais for reds for example) I don't have a problem. For whites, the low-alcohol (11% or lower) wines don't upset my IC...I can drink German wines like Gewurtz, Riesling etc with no problem.
Also I can drink low-tannin black tea but also always add milk which smooths the tannin.
Here's more about tannin but basically it means anything that tastes astringent or "mouth puckering...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tannin
And don't forget that its referred to as tannic acid...and we all know that for us acid is the devil
BTW:chocolate has tannin which if my theory is correct is why it's usually a no-no for ICers
Also, I always take Prelief when I indulge in tea/wine...
If you want to try wine or any other tannin-containing suspect, be cautious and start only with small portions & take some Prelief, too, until you know what's safe for you as we are all different in what we can tolerate...HTH

I can't have even a little sip of red wine. I'm not sure why. I also have a severe problem with any kind of tea except herbal teas (which aren't actually "tea") --- even with Prelief.

Hi Donna! I recall you said you can drink dessert wine but can you drink any other white wine? It sounds like you're really sensitive to anything with tannin.
Weird as it sounds, turkey kills me & sends me into a major flare. Unhappy Thanksgiving. Chicken? No problema.
BTW, I forgot to add that oaky white wines (like lots of Chardonnays) and young tannic Bordeaux trigger flares for me.
IC is a very mysterious affliction indeed.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I will try to have a few sips of some of the wines you suggested with prelief. In the beggining when I was first diagnosed any alcohol was a major trigger for a flare. Now, after being on Elmiron I can have a little without problems. I haven't tried wine yet as that one was a big flare producer for me.
