Hi,

A year after developing bladder kicking/pain, I got urethral pain. Anyone's bladder pain precede their urethral burning?

I've now pretty much eliminated the bladder pain with birth control and Atarax--but my urethra still hurts. Estrace cream DOES seem to help (makes me think maybe the birth control or Atarax is drying me out), but doesn't eliminate it. It hurts when it's touched and during sex.

I can't do Elavil (tried it once, and I felt like a crazy person). My doc gave me an Rx for Neurotin, but I'm scared to try it because of weight gain.

What has worked for people for urethral burning? And (again)--when did your buring come on (before or years after your bladder pain)?

Thanks so much!

my urethral pain came after the bladder pain. I would recommend you try a natural supplement called cantharis. You can find it at whole foods market. It comes in a little vial - it is tiny pills you dissolve under your tongue. It is only about $7 for a vial that lasts about 10 days. So, if it doesn't work, then at least you haven't broke the bank trying something! Good luck to you.

I forgot to add to my last post, that I have noticed I have less urethral pain when I started taking a calcium citrate product. I personally use caltrate. It is supposed to help remove crystals that are naturally in your urine. That way, when you urinate, the urine is smooth and not full of micropscopic crystals that can cause irriatation. I take it three times a day, along with fish oil twice daily, and flax seed oil three times a day. Hope this helps too!

I rarely get urethral burning but when I do Rx lidocaine gel 2% (it numbs, cools, soothes) works well for me, as does Pyridium or its OTC versions AZO Standard and Uristat...the stuff that turns the pee orange. Bestwishes,Bri:)

Urethral burning was one of my first symptoms and has been with me ever since.

Some other things not yet mentioned that I find helps with the burn is to pay attention to how much spring water I'd been drinking. Usually it wasn't enough. I keep a bottle of cool water in the bathroom to rinse the urethra with. -A temporary measure, but it does seem to put out the fire for a bit. Also, for some reason a bath seems to help with my burn.

AZO or Uristat are the only things I've used that will help for hours at a time, though I've heard they shouldn't be used long-term.

I hope you find something that helps you get this symptom under control too.

Vicki

Hi, I am new here but I had the same sensation after my Cystoscopy & Hydrodistention and went back because of buring (uretha), spasms and frequent runs to the bathroom. For the burning and spasms I was put on Urelle, have only been on it since this past Monday 12/1 but I do notice a big difference. The spasms are better but I still occasionally get them. For the frequent runs to the bathroom I was put on Vesicare, I was was told this takes a little bit longer to get into your system but I have noticed a slight difference. Enough so I asked them to call in a prescription to continue. When I left the office they were really good to give me samples to see how they would work. Always ask for samples, it doesn't hurt and that way if it doesn't work out, no money lost. I used both of these with my Elmiron and my pain med. hydrocodone and they do not make me feel loopy at all. I was also told I could use my Lorazapan (which I only use once in a great while for anxiety attacks) to use that with the pain med and I tried it today at home and *NO* pelvic pain nor pressure at all and again, I don't feel loopy. For the first time in a long time I feel *normal* <G> Good Luck!

I forgot to mention these two meds can help with burning. I use the generic of urelle called utira-c. There is no generic of prosed so it can be expensive. Your doctor should have free samples of these for you to try.

I use Urelle and when I remember to take it three times a day I am great! I am waiting for my Elmiron to arrive in the mail and then I hope to be on the way to good days!!
