in november 2002, i had laparoscopic surgery. after the surgery, i was unable to urinate. about 12 hours after surgery, the doc ordered a straight catheter. barely 100cc came out (this is after 3 IV bags of fluids and 3 pitchers of water). did all kinds of tests, then an hour later another straight catheter. still only 100cc. about 14 hours after surgery, the on-call doc released me to go home with a foley cath. had it removed the next day. so that's one thing that might have caused problems.

didn't have any problems again until feb 2003. started depo lupron to put me into temporary menopause (to shrink the endometriosis since surgery hadn't worked). about 4 weeks after starting lupron, i started to have trouble urinating. i would go a couple days without being able to pee. called my gyn, he found blood in my pee. figured it's a UTI, gave me antibiotics and urelle. it got worse. so he tried a different antibiotic and urelle. it got worse again. and now i was having pain in the ureters too. so he stopped the lupron, stopped the antibiotics, gave me urelle, scheduled another surgery, sent me to a urologist also, and said he suspected endo in the bladder.

during the 2nd surgery, they did a cystoscopy to see if it was endometriosis in the bladder. it was IC instead. my doc thinks the estrogen loss from the lupron caused the lining to break down, but that it was already compromised from the caths after the first surgery. fortunately, i have a mild case. we caught it quickly. and i'm lucky to have a gyn who has a big interest in urology (his wife is a urologist, so that could be the reason).

but my theory is the caths after the first surgery may have introduced bacteria. and then when i lost the estrogen, it just made things worse. i am glad it wasn't endometriosis inside the bladder. but sometimes i wonder if it would have been a better trade-off. after all, they would have just removed it, resectioned it, and in a few months, it would have been better. don't know. they're both pretty evil if you ask me.

Sorry you went through that. Not too sure you have gotten better if it had been endo in the bladder...but atleast you would have the one disease to treat. Still scarry. Interesting theory....makes sense that the catheder brought bacteria and such. If you have to have IC it is good yours was caught early.
