No, Tylenol is normally fine with IC. It's Ibuprofin that is the no no. I hope you have good luck with it. I have a good friend on here that Tylenol 3 helps her alot!

Tylenol 3 has been my main pain med for years. It works exceptionally well for me and quickly for me...just one tab within an hour can knock my pain down from as high as an 8 to a zero. It helps me not only for pain but also bladder burning and the vaginal and vular burning I get with Vulvodynia and Vuvar Vestibulitis. I hope it relieves your pain, too.
I have actually tried stronger pain meds...Lortab 7.5 (vicodin) and ms contin (morphine) that did not work as well or not at all for my pain.
The first few times I took tylenol 3 it made me very sleepy and a bit dizzy. That is a comon side effect if it your first time taking it or other narcotic pain meds. But that was the first time I had ever taken a narcotic pain med so was not tolerant to those initial side effects. So I split the tabs in half (approved by my dr and pharmacist) for the first week or so and only took them in the evening and after that was able to take an entire tab without problems and have never had problems since, even if months go by between the times I take it.
If it works well for you, one advantage of it over some of the other Rx pain meds is that is much less lkely to cause physical dependence. It is Tylenol, Codeine, and possibly a very small amount of caffeine. I have not become physically dependent on it and it works as well for me now as it did when I first started taking it 4 yrs ago. I do take it sparingly and only as needed. Best wishes, let us know how it works for you...feel free to pm me if you have questions about it or are experiencing any side effects. Those initial side effects are not uncommon, and almost always go away with continued use as your body adjusts to the med. Bri)

is Tylenol 3 a prescribed med? Didn't they have something called that that you could buy over the counter a long time ago?
I have been having pelvic pain now for 2 days and nothing is working. I took 2 aleeves each day, a pyridium today, yoga today and 2 preliefs today. I have lower back pain, pelvic pain, and a little throbbing, a little frequency, no burning. i'm going on vacation next week and feel like I should call my Dr. to prescribe something before I go but don't know what.
I have not tried AZO standard yet, is that usually strong enough? Do you have to take it everyday; it doesn't sound like it is used for muscular pain.
What is good for muscular pains?

what is the brand name for ibuprofen?
Advil seems to be the most commonly available brand name found in stores, although there are others. I believe Motrin also contains ibuprofen. Most stores offer a generic variety that is much cheaper, but I find that for menstrual cramps brand name Advil works better for me than the generics/store brands.

Hi. Tylenol 3 is only a prescribed med. to my knowledge. It works but in my case it keeps me awake. I think it has caffeine in it. I always keep a bottle of pain meds with me. Many people have trouble getting these narcotics from their Doctors. That seems unfair as we could go into a major flare at any time. I have a long standing relationship with our family Doctor so he knows me well enough that I will only take them if necessary. I find, for me, that a strong muscle relaxer helps any spasms the most. Carisoprodol 350. PLEASE never even consider driving while on any pain med or a strong muscle relaxer! If you have no one to drive you, stay home. My reaction while on these drugs become very slow and I have trouble thinking clearly. Have a great vacation Tangerine3. You deserve it. Hugs, Ziggy

Yes, I believe TYlenol 3 has a bit of caffeine in it. After I became tolerant to the initial sleepy/dizzy side effects it has not been a med that puts me to sleep...I think it sometimes actually keeps me from sleeping, I suspect b/c of the caffeine, esp since I have cut all caffeine out of my diet over the years I've had IC.
It is available only by Rx in the US.
I was just this week prescribed Tylenol 4 and I think I read somewhere that T4 does not contain caffeine. I may be wrong. I need to ask my pharmacist.
Absolutely, it seems as Zyg said that MRs can really impair a person's ability to drive....I know I can't....all of the MRs I have tried can knock me out for up to 14hrs. I prefer low dose valium 2mg in lieu of MRs b/c I have no side effects from it like I get from the MRs, and it does seem to help very well along with a Tylenol 3 for bladder referred back pain. THankfully I can very well tolerate Tyenol 3 now.
Yes, Tang, I hope that you have a great vacation and an even better one with pain relief provided by Tylenol 3. It is a good pain med to start with, b/c if it works, then you shouldn't have to move on to something stronger that may be more habit forming or have more side effects. I really hope you get the same great relief from it as I have:) Bri

My Drs. office was closed today so didn't get to ask for the Tylenol3. Good thing since now I'm reading it contains caffeine. I can't tolerate any caffeine triggers my anxiety. But I will call Walgreens and ask the pharmacist if Tylenol 4 contains caffeine. Thanks

I think it is a very very small amount of caffeine. Believe me, I have anxiety!! but getting pain relief Tylenol 3 reduces my anxiety DRAMATICALLY. The more pain I have the more anxiety I have. If you absolutely cannot tolerate any amount of caffeine, ask about Tylenol 4...it may not contain caffeine...I thiink I remember reading that somewhere a few times. HOwever,T4 has twice the amount of codeine in one tab than does T3, so if you are rxd T4 then please discuss splitting T4 tabs in half, as just one half tab T4 should work as well as a whole tab of T3.

Ok, just as an FYI and I myself was interested as well...so I googled how much caffeine is in 1 8oz cup of coffee and it is between 80-175 mgs. In comparison, I think tylenol 3 has maybe 15mg caffeine/tab...I will also look that up to make sure.

Ok, just googled real fast and looked at one site and it said that T3 has 30mg caffeine/tab and that T4 has no caffeine/tab. However, I can say that T3 has NEVER contributed to my anxiety issues, and believe me they ARE an issue. Really if pain relief is what I need then my anxiety is usually not a problem, caffeine or not.:)

How dumb am I! I never thought that there might be a higher does of TY-3. Wondrerful question to ask my Doctor. My Pain pills are rather strong. I would prefer to take something milder. Thank you for all the information. Isn't this a great site to help each other. Hugs to all. Ziggy

You can get tylenol 3 without caffine, it has a different name can't remeber right now, but I couldn't take T3 with caffine because I am really sensative to caffine, any amount makes me not sleep. The caffine enhances the effect of the tylenol and codiene. But I am sure it does come without it. For info on any meds you can go to www.mayoclinic.com and look up most meds, I find them to be quite a reliable site, with good info.

Yes I am pretty sure that there is some formulation the same strength as Tylenol 3 that has the codeine and acetominophen, but not the caffeine. It must be a different brand name than Tylenpl 3...the script I guess needs to be written diffently probably...I have always been rxd Tylenol 3 but of course get the generic version from the pharmacy.
Zyg, yes I was just rxd T4 after years of taking T3. I just asked my dr about it and said I would be ingesting less acetaminophen, and since 1 T4 tab has the same amount of codeine as 2 tabs of T3, and often I would need two tabs of T3 to get pain under control, so just asked if I could try T4 so with just one tab see if I coulget pain under control and with less acetominophen. Anyway, I took my first dose of T4 today, one tab, and it worked great. It did make me a little tired, I'm suspecting since it is not supposed to contain caffeine....but I don't think that will be a problem for long since I usually adjust to and tolerate meds well. So if it really doesn't contain caffeine, that would be nice, since I suppose I probably am more sensitive to it since I have pretty much cut it out of my diet....but would be nice if T4 doesn't KEEP me from sleeping like T3 has, and that with use that it won't continue to make me sleepy. And if I don't feel the need for a full tab I can take half a tab. It didn't knock me out..I just noticed that I was a little more tired after taking it rather than my usual T3....but hard to tell....Thanksgiving was a long a stressful day and I paid for it today and was perfectly happy to spend most of the day in bed, meds or no meds, this was a sick day for me. Best wishes...if you try it let me know how it works for you.B
