I am wondering if anyone with IC has tried maca for their libido? Does it hurt your bladder?
Or is anyone using any other supplements that seem to help with their libido?

I bought supplement called Macafem (maca root). I started taking it and vitamin B complex at the same time. My bladder started acing on the 3rd day and I stopped taking the supplements. I heard that vitimin B can make your bladder worse and now I don't know which one of these supplements cause the pain and too afraid to try maca root again. Is maca root suppose to cause bladder discomfort?

Maca has a weak androgenic effect, like other things you just have to see if it bothers your bladder or not. Sometimes the purity of the Maca makes a difference as some manufacturers use fillers that you could react to.
Why dont you get your hormone levels checked by your Gyno. For a lot of women libido problems are due to low testosterone or estradiol.

If you're taking any medications at all, you really should talk to your doctor before adding any herbals.

" Small-scale clinical trials performed in men have shown that maca extracts can heighten libido and improve semen quality. Maca does not affect sex hormone levels in humans, and has not been shown to act on hormones directly. It has been presumed that maca's hormone-normalizing effects may be due to the root's unique nutritional profile, which provides optimum levels of nutrients utilized by the body's endocrine system."

I'm with Donna on this one. You should check with your URO DR.

Fair restuls after one month: I have read on the internet that maca works to correct the hormones, but strenthening the hypothalamus pituitary axis, not by changing any hormones. This will balance homones naturally. I have been on 6 capsels for 2 weeks. I started with one per day, then 2, etc until I got to 6 in a day. This amt is suggested for exhausted adrenals. I have had adrenal exhaustion, IBS, Fibro (both for 20 yrs), also hot at night for 10 yrs and now Cystitis. and I read of one person on-line who had their bladder get better. They had a "irritated bladder" but not yet cystitis. This product takes a long time to work. It is not fast. I have noticed my bladder feels a little bit better. My bladder was horrible. I can have white wine now and some other foods like strawberries, and other "try it foods". I have noticed some better energy also. Hot flashes seem slightly less. Lots of hormone tests before and after are listed on-line. People say they can even get pregnant after yrs of no children. Research "maca and testimonials" on the net. Lots of info. One guy w only/one adrenal gland was exhaused all his adult life until maca. Damm if it works for him... Anyway I will try to update again in a few more months. I found no bad side effects for me.:hi:

Update. After while I figured out that the maca was irritating my bladder. I tested it on and off for a few months. I tried different amounts: 1/8 tsp to 1/2 tsp. Taking less was easier on my bladder, but still irritating. I found that I did get some better sleep, but not much, as I was messing with the dose, on it and then not on it. It is fairly high in potassium (you can look up how much on the internet). I did not need to take it for sex drive, but for hot flashes. Guess I will try bioidentical hormones next as I need to get some sleep. The night before my period, I am up ALL NIGHT. I almost never get a decent night's sleep. This makes my fibro worse.:dizzy:
