Hi everyone, I am interested to learn more about Trigonitis, but I can't seem to find much information on the symptoms.
I see the term and definition, but all it says is pain urgency and frequency.
I have pain mainly in my urethra, sometimes it is bad and other times it isn't as bad but when I urinate I know if I will have the pain or not, which sometimes leads me to holding it for quite a while. When I have the strong urgency to urinate, that is when I can urinate without pain. It's as if I have to "time" it right, I can't just push to urinate, otherwise I have strong pain that comes with chills and it is not a burning, just more of a very, very uncomfortable feeling that lasts about 20 minutes. I will have the feeling just throughout the day sometimes also, as well as a burning sensation in my urethra at other times. I do have frequency as well and overactive bladder symptoms, as well as nocturia, although I feel that this may be because of meds that my previous urologist put me on, I think they made my bladder more weak and messed with my nerves.
I have not seen anyone else ever talk about their pain the same as I do, I really think I am the only one that has these symptoms  and now I have just heard of Trigonitis, so I'm wondering if that is more close to what I may have going on. Any input would be so helpful!!

The trigone is a triangular shaped area at the base of the bladder. It's not unusual at all for an interstitial cystitis patient to be diagnosed with trigonitis before being diagnosed with IC.

heres the wikipedia link----some people don't like wiki but this is the best explanation.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trigonitis
http://www.ic-network.com/handbook/basics.html
has definitions of other things related to this thing we got...
quote from it 'Urethritis
Urethritis is used to describe an inflammation or infection of the urethra in men and women. Inflammation can be caused by direct trauma to the urethra or can be an irritation from spermicides, soaps, douches or bath oils. Some sexually transmitted diseases, such as chlamydia, can also cause a urethral infection and urethral discharge that may also be labeled as urethritis .
Urethral Syndrome
As mentioned earlier, urethral syndrome can be used to describe the symptoms of a UTI when urinalysis fails to reveal infection. Some physicians, such as Hanno, believe that urethral syndrome is short, rather than long, term. Many IC patients, including the authors of this book, have received urethral syndrome diagnoses before the IC was actually discovered.
Trigonitis
Trigonitis patients may experience similar symptoms of frequency, urgency and/or pain. Trigonitis is diagnosed when physicians discover that the trigone (a triangular portion of the bladder that contains the openings for both the ureters and the urethra) appears inflamed and/or has a "cobblestone like" appearance. Some urologists don't believe in trigonitis because they believe that the cobblestone appearance is normal to the trigone. Others believe that an inflammation of the trigone may have a direct role in urethral syndrome .
Prostatitis
There are several types of prostatitis diagnosed in men, including bacterial prostatitis (acute and chronic), non-bacterial prostatitis, and prostatodynia. The latter two account for 95% of all prostatitis diagnoses and usually have symptoms of perineal (or nearby) pain, reduced urine flow (and related symptoms), and possibly impotence and pain before, during or after ejaculation .
Dysuria & Nocturia
Dysuria describes pain with urination. Nocturia describes frequent urination during sleep or nighttime hours .
Overactive Bladder Syndrome & Urge Incontinence
Overactive bladder syndrome and urge incontinence patients may have frequency, urgency and episodes of incontinence. It is theorized that overactive bladder is the result of a neurological dysfunction, or smooth muscle disease, of the bladder. It is called detrusor hyperreflexia when a neurological cause is known and detrusor instability when there is no neurologic abnormality .
Interstitial Cystitis, Painful Bladder Syndrome, Freqency-Urgency-Dysuria Syndrome
Interstitial cystitis, painful bladder syndrome and frequency-urgency-dysuria syndrome, are used interchangeably to describe urinary frequency, urgency and/or feelings of pain or pressure around the bladder, pelvis and perineum. IC patients usually have additional findings of small hemorrhages (called glomerulations) or ulcers within the bladder. In addition, patients may have a decreased bladder capacity and painful sexual intercourse. Women may flare during their menstrual cycle. Men may have scrotal or penis pain . '

quote' Trigonitis is another disease which has virtually identical symptoms to IC (frequency, urgency an/or pain). Trigonitis is used when doctors observe that the trigone in the bladder has a "cobblestone like" appearance. Some doctors dispute trigonitis as a disease because they believe that the trigone naturally looks that way. '

whether you have trigonitis or IC, its similar symptoms, and most likely similar treatment. my urologist told me with IC, most patients feel the pain in the trigon area, or the area where the bladder meets the urethra (at the muscle), and thats where a lot of the inflammation seems to be.
i have similar pain as you, mostly in the urethra and bottom portion of the bladder. sometimes when i sit down to pee, i get a strong sharp wave of pain before the pee comes out. then sometimes the feeling lingers for a while. i'm guessing its a spasm in the bladder muscle sphincter which is located in the trigon area.
