Hi guys..
I am so scared, I have a surgery for a very deviated septum the day after tomorrow. I am a bit anxious and nervous and haven't really been sleeping well. Hopefully, I have the option of staying overnight for pain control if needed.
Despite this, I am nervous. I tried to talk to doc about pain meds after - he said he usually gives Vicodin, but that doesn't do anything for me anymore. I'm now on MS Contin.
I'm nervous about the packing that's going to be in my nose overnight, the pain, and having a splint in for a week!
Would appreciate any advice for prep (not much time) and for during recovery.
Thanks

I wish I had some words of wisdom for you. Surgery of any kind is nerve-wracking and normal to be anxious.
Well, Vicodin has never helped my pain, I mean not at all, it just doesn't work for me. But Tylenol 3 does and it works great for me, even tho it is considered a weaker pain med. Possibly you just need a different pain med if Vicodin isn't working for you. Please discuss this with your dr because you don't want to be left without pain relief that you will probably need! Other than Tylenol 3 I have had excellent relief with 4 mg Dilaudid. But please discuss with your dr options for pain relief post op especially since you know vicodin doesn't work for you.
Good luck with your surgery. I'm sure the recovery will not be fun, but I know many people get a lot of relief with the surgery you are having. Best wishes.Bri:)

You will do great! I had the same surgery 8 yrs. ago, splint & all. It was not bad & you'll be amazed how well you'll be able to breath thru your nose after. God bless.

Hi guys,
I had my surgery yesterday. It turns out I was given Reglan before my surgery. Apparently, I am allergic to that because I was pretty much tossing and turning and thrashing around and extremely anxious. At first, the docs and nurses didn't know what was going on with me. Fortunately, there was 1 nurse there who was very observant and remembered that what I was doing was a documented allergic reaction and side effect to Reglan. They gave me Benadryl, which reversed the process. They also had to give me Loreazepam (Ativan) to help my body relax and come back from that reaction.
I was taken into surgery 1 1/2 hours late and I was besides myself. Afterwards, I also baffled the docs and recovery room staff again. Again, because they kept just giving me morphine despite the fact that I've made it clear that morhpine won't work for me as a breakthrough med b/c I take it as maintenance. It took them 1/2 hour to call my friend (whom I've notified of that fact) to ask if there were any other pain meds I took. She informed them of Dilaudid and they kept giving me Ms contin and Zoffran (instead of compazine and reglan).
I was transferred to 23 hour care bc there were no hospital beds open. At least, I had a bed instead of a gurney to sleep on. It was a fitful night, but the nurses were no where near like the one I had for my Botox, cystoscopy and first instill procedure.
My Dr for my septoplasty and he also did something else (sorry, still on dilaudid and meds) FINALLY communicated with my chronic pain program and gave orders for dilaudid IV. For the first time since I got there, my pain level went from 11 to 1. The nurses were asounded, duh? I kept overhearing them tell each other how my pain levels dropped from 11 to 1 with dilauded, which is what I was trying to tell them from the moment I was there!
Anyway, my needs finally got met and my md even wrote for dilaudid 4 mg (stronger than last time) for me and he dropped it off at the pharmacy personally for me...I was shocked and pleasantly surprised.
Anyway, it was an good experience except when they kept giving me more morphine. Thanks for your prayers, thoughts and advice...very helpful.
I am now wearing some funky thing to hold a drip pad under my nose cuz I'm still bleeding.
Just wanted to give you an update.
Now I've asked my church for a few meals and am hoping they can make it here as I live pretty far away from church.
Thanks
Steph

Glad to hear it is over with, sorry you had to work at getting properer pain relief. Something that could have been avoided if you doctor had called the pain managment prior to your surgery.
I know they deal with people in pain everyday, but people who need pain meds daily are not the norm, so need to be treated differently.
Hope you recovery goes well.

Like Mothergoose said, I am happy to hear that hopefully the worst is behind you. Ahhhh... morphine...it doesn't do a thing for me either, short term or longterm, so I am glad you got the IV Dilaudid and an Rx for it. It really is a wonderful pain med, huh?...no Tylenol, fast acting, and few to no side effects. Hope you continue to heal and that your pain decreases in a timely manner. And of course praying that you will be breathing normally now that your septum has been repaired! Best wishes, Bri:)
