Holding Beyond What the Bladder Can

When I had my cystoscopy with hyperdistention, my bladder stretched was approx. 500cc. However, whenever I have urinary retention, it is more than that, even by over 200cc. How can that happen and how is the extra urine stored? Does the bladder stretch or something?

Yes, your bladder can stretch. When I was pregnant my bladder shut down and when the Dr finally cathed me I was holding 1250cc. The danger is that the urine can back up into the kidneys and cause a kidney infection. It was extremely painful, too.
