I go in next Tuesday for a 1st rib resection. I injured my shoulder a year ago. I have had a biceps tendon repair, and now I have to have surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome. I will be in the hospital for 3-5 days. After that, I will be limited in what I can do for at least 3 months. I am nervous about this surgery, and how I will be able to deal with my IC symptoms while I am recovering. I am also nervous about the urinary catheter during and after the surgery. i have read a lot here about people cathing themselves, etc, but I haven't had a cath since the pain started. Will this be painful?

I hope the surgery goes well without complications and that your recovery goes quickly. :):):)

I just had gall bladder surgery and I too was a bit concerned about the catheter causing irritation and/or a UTI. Fortunately the cath was removed immediately after surgery, and I had no issues going to the bathroom afterwards.
Make sure you inform everyone who will be taking care of you during your hospital stay about your bladder situation. As long as they know beforehand they can better assist you afterwards.
Wishing you an uneventful surgery and recovery.

I had my shoulder surgery. I had the 1st rib removed on my left side. I can already tell that the burning pain i've been experiencing in my shoulder and arm is gone. I had been dealing with that pain for a year, and when I woke up after surgery, it was just gone! I am very sore, bruised, and swollen. Also, I have had to learn how to self-cath because of retention issues. For 2 days I could only go by cathing. Now it is intermittent. I am not sure if it was the IV fluids, having the cath in, or what, but something caused a major flare! I woke up after having a rib cut out in excruciating bladder pain because of the folay. I just wanted to update everybody!

I'm glad to hear that the surgery is behind you and the pain is gone. That is excellent news. I hope your bladder settles down very soon. :)

I'm so glad your surgery went well. Hopefully now that the stress of the surgery is over your bladder will begin to settle down.
Warm hugs,

I am glad to hear your surgery was a success. sorry you are having bladder issues. When I have had surgery in the past my bladder seems to stop functioning.
