I suffer from very bad spasms in my bladder and also my pelvic floor.....Ouch!

They are much worse than they used to be....

Is there any medications that help with spasms there that do not totally put you to sleep?

Thanks.

the only medication I've found that works is Valium and that will put you to sleep. I take it religiously, 5mgs 3 times a day. It helps tremendously, and I know when I haven't taken it. Unfortunately, it is sedating, but not as bad as it used to be. When my spasms get realllll bad, I take another pill and plan on sleeping for the next 3 hours. I also take morphine and some other "stuff". (Not narcotics)

I'm working on visuallizations and have a tape made by my counselor. I'm not very good at it yet. But I want to eventually get off these damn things:)

Sorry I can't be more help. If your IC is caused by mast cell increases, maybe you can try some querciten (a supplement) it's a natural antihistime and if you are not taking an anti histime, you can take up to 1500mgs of this. It wont sedate you. I take it, but only 500 mgs because I take an anti histime.

I sure hope your pain goes away...or at least is allieviated, I feel for you- Tracey

Gee Rhonda....What'd they catch? Usually fish is pretty tame for me. But we are all so different, that is why it is so hard to give any advice.

I sure hope you feel better. My Pt worked my ass off yesterday. I hurt so bad today. She did alot of balance work, plus yoga and Tai chi before making me do stair master and bike. I was so sweaty my hair was drenched. My gut hurts big time. Do you ever get a burning sensation right above your belly button, from left to right? (as a part of a bad flare...) I always read every thing below the belly button but my IC always involves this...(I think its the transverse colon) Ugh...It really hurts today, but I've lost 5 pounds since the last two days because I'm too scared to eat. It hurts like hell. It didn't hurt while we were working. It felt great. Like a cleansing.

Anyway...gotta, go...good luck to you.

Feel better 'k? Tracey

Actually I have "just" started back on Paxil again, It seems to be the only thing so far that helps my spasms.
I "was" trying to get off of it.....but couldn't deal with the pain.

It gives me such a craving for sweets....and that is a battle. But it does help to take the edge off.

Hey Tracey

I like how you spell your name...my parents don't realize what hell they put me through when they spelled my name "Tracey". No pencils w/ proper spelling, no personalized bicycle license plate....It was traumatic!!!!!! You may be younger than me though so chances are, the spelling was a little more common.

Glad the Paxil is working for you. Those types of drugs make me gain lots of wieght so I stay clear.

Good luck to you!!

I take hyoscyamine when I have spasms --- it works very well for me. I have also taken urispas in the past and it also worked. It does take a few days for me before they begin working well --- and neither makes me sleepy.

OK I found the message you are reffering to...Phew..thought I was going nuts. Yes, I was in major pain yesterday due to my Pt workout and i always get that pain that starts above my belly button. Ouch...don't understand it. I always think my gut is going to die. It finally settled down after much relaxation and my favorite heating pad. And drugs.:D

Anyhow...I'm in pain today but not bad. I've just realized I'm moving a bit too quickly in in PT...I'm too eager. I still am not eating much cause I'm scared. I do eat some special oatmeal, with blueberries. It's good and has the "stuff" to move along those slow bowels. (Just what you needed toknow...)

Night night...

Hi Blue

I feel like I've been through the wringer with Pt and Pelvic floor therapy. You should check out the topic "pelvic floor therapy" and it's threads...I think under Treatments?

Anyway, despite the indignity of it, it has been the one thing to put me back on the path of getting my life together. My therapist was very kind and empathetic...you really need that when you are undergoing that. If youdon't like your PT, demand a new one because when things are that "intimate" you really need to like the person who is helping you andlistens to you when you say..."ouch...I'm done...STOP".

Like I said, check out the actual topic and there are alot of experiences written there.

Thank you for your suggestions and you are so right you have to be as comfortable as can be in an uncomfortable situation.

Hey Tracey,

Glad to hear the PT is so helpful. I'd like to find a PTist like that - I thought they only did the massage, etc. I know that yoga would help me, flabby queen that I am.

Does your insurance help pay for the PT?

Duh..guess you were under PF therapies...geez. What a space head.

There are a couple of different things you can expect: I'll take you through what my therapist did, then tell you what I've read in addition

First: after getting to know me, she felt around my belly and watched for tenderness. Then (she was telling me every thing she was doing before she did it) She checked for tenderness in the outer labia, and outer pelvic floor muscles. She did this with her fingers. Then she inserted her finger into my vagina, searching for "trigger points"...think of when you have a sore back and someone finds the "sore spot" and massages it. It is between a hurt and a good feeling that someone is working out the knot. That's basically it,she's workingout knots in my vagina.

Then: After she does a massage of the spot, we practice squeezing pf muscles around her finger then relaxing...(that we have to do is over relax those muscles.."as if you are passing gas" as she says) Then she looks for new ones.

Finally: We do a nice little biofeedback. She attaches electrodes to my anus (yes, it is as fun as it sounds) then practice contracting and relaxing the muscles, watching the squiggly lines do their things......I guess those got better and better....

Other folks talk about cone shaped doo hickeys being inserted in your vagina and doing biofeedback straight from there....(IE: no finger insertion...)

So, while this all sounds pretty embarrasing, it has been incredibly helpful for me. I don't have that therapy done anymore..I'm doing more endurance work. But you should definately not be afraid. Think of it as a pelvic exam with more compassion. :)

If you have any more questions please feel free to ask, or you can send me an e-mail at solfish37@hotmail.com

Emily: If your therapist and doctor determine that that would help your recovery, and (believe me, the stronger ab muscles help your bladder, it holds your position of the bladder) you really want to set yourmind to doing the work, you should definately look into it. I'm certainly not a skinney little thing, bout average, but I am becoming more toned. and my tummy muscles are really doing their jobs now.

I had severe pelvic floor pain and spasms for years, that knocked the wind out of me..SOSO painful!!
Then my Doc had me do "Biofeedback"..simple excersise. and I got "ahold" of those spasms and learned to use the muscles to stop them dead.. No meds were needed for this and I don't get them any more at all, just practise, practise, practise..This simple thing only took a few weeks (for me) and was covered by my insurance..Most any insurance I think will cover it...and no "junk meds" or weight gaining meds to dope me up..You may want to give this simple thing some thought, before you do the more med route....It's better in the long run then drugging yourself..I always try the less medicated way first.. Just my 2 cents..Hope this helps, and mostly..hope you feel better soon. I know those used to hurt awfully bad, took my breath away!! Good luck

Thanks so much for the advice. It is encouraging to hear that you don't "always" need drugs for pain.

I will look into it.
