My doctor just prescribed Lexapro because I could not take Tofranil (tofronil helped the pain, but made me not sleep) He also said he did not think Elavil would be a good drug for me. So, he prscribed Lexapro.

My questions:
Does Lexapro (10mg) cause weight gain like Elavil? Does anyone else take it? Does it cause you not to sleep? Please reply if you have any info. I have had side effects to almost every drug and am very leery of taking a new one. Thanks, Tilly:)

I have gained weight on Lexapro - about 7 - 10 pounds. I don't know that it is a commons side effect, but I was lucky enough to get it. Oddly enough I did not gain weight on the Elavil.

I did have some drowsiness initially on Lexapro, but it got better. I also started taking it at night to help fight the drowsiness. I had dry mouth for a couple of weeks and it went away.

In the end, though, it has helped me TREMENDOUSLY, so I guess it has been worth the extra weight. Maybe? I have lost 3 pounds of it by working out and eating a little better so I am holding out hope I can lose the rest. :LMBO:

I've been on Lexapro since last March, 10mgs like you. It is a sub clinical dose, meaning that usually they prescribe higher doses.

I went on the drug because of mood instability with migraines....prior to my IC diagnosis. I've been on other anti depressants but gained so much wieght. I haven't had a problem with this med and wieght gain or sleep problems. (I feel sedated but due to other drugs....prior to taking those drugs I was fine, the lexapro didn't hurt me.)

so...I guess I'm saying that it doesn't hurt me, and when I've tried to go off, my family knows:rolleyes: And I get real down, suicidal even so I've promised them Iwould stay on it.

Anyway...good luck...Tracey

Hi Tilly,
I take Lexapro and I LOVE it! I feel so much better emotionally, it's truly amazing. I never plan to go off it (thanks again, Kim, for sharing with me your experience with it when I was hesitant too). The only side effect I had was feeling a bit anxious (like my shoulders were up to my ears) the first few days and I think a bit of nausea (which seems to be related more to my IBS than anything else). That all quickly wore off and it's been the good life ever since. And it took effect really fast! I was on Zoloft a few years ago but I'm finding Lexapro quite a bit superior to Z.

Good luck to you!
Melanie J.

Tilly,

You are the most amazing woman (physically) I have ever met, I can understand your hesitantcy to not want to gain any weight, I'll try not to sound to much like a weirdo but you look fabulous! I have yet to see a woman at your wonderful stage in life, (I will not mention your age) with such style, genuine kindness, and really truley a runway model like figure, you look amazing!
If you were to gain 10 pounds NO ONE but you would notice, I feel confident in telling you this because I feel like others who know you would have to agree.
I know how scarry it is to gain weight on the regime of meds that our Uro's prescribe,( I gained 30).
Yet it seems like the weight comes off when you can get the meds that are right for you (a lofty and somewhat tedious task!!!).
I believe through personal experience that once you feel better as a whole with your IC which sometimes has to come through a lenghty list of medications, you can overcome some of the problems that sometimes arrise out of having this disease i.e. weight gain, depression, mood swings, etc.
First and foremost I believe you have to take care of the IC before it tries to take care of you!
You are a bright and intelligent woman and I trust that any action you take on this issue will be correct for you, But honey take it from me YOU LOOK FABULOUS!!!
Much love and concern
Proud to be your friend!

Hello, I did gain weight on Lexapro but not initially. It also kept me wide awake at night and drowsy during the day. It seemed to do that no matter what time of the day I tried to take it. I also experienced very low libido. It worked great the first few months but does not seem to help at all now. After a year, I have decided to try something else. As a note, my sister took it and it made her constantly sleepy! It seems like it is different for everyone! With these type of medicines, you have try different things until you find what is right for you.
