My doctor gave me Elavil for my IC, 10 mg once a day. I am also taking Elmirol, Prosed and Hydroxzyine. The Hydroxzynine makes me really tired and so does the Elavil. How long does the Elavil take to show any results? I just took one so far, but most likely I will need to take it much longer.
What exactly is it suppossed to do? I would like to hear from anybody taking this med and how it has worked for you.

Hi and welcome :hi:
Yes I have taken Elavil 10 mg with much success for nocturia, sleeping through the night, urgency, frequency. Others report getting some nerve pain relief from this med. Many consider it one of the mainstay meds of their treatment plans. It started woking within a few days for me...others say a week or more. Yes, it can give you morning groggies and a bit of a hangover...that should be less of a problem the longer you take it. I and many others have conquered that by taking it earlier in the evening around dinnertime or at least a few hours before going to bed. If I take it this way it doesn't knock me out but once I DO go to sleep, I stay asleep without nighttime trips to the bathroom :)
You may be able to take the hydrox in the same way, earlier in the evening, to reduce the same side effects I mentioned above that are common with Elavil.
Have you been taking hydrox for sometime now and the Elavil just recently added to your regimen? I ask because some patients and doctors prefer to add just one med at a time to see what helps and what is causing side effects. Elavil 10 mg is a good dose to start at, it is very low, and for me I have never had to increase the dose except occasionally I take 20 mg if I'm flaring. If you feel that 10 mg is too much to start, you can ask your dr if you can split the tabs, I know they are tiny but it can be done. I approved it with my dr and pharmacist and occasionally I split a 10 mg tab.
Best wishes! I hope this med works for you!

Hello! To answer your question, I have been taking hydroxzyine for about 6 weeks. I rarely get up at night to go to the bathroom unless I have a very bad day/night.
I did NOt take the Hydrozyine when I took the Elavil yesterday as I was concerned with the tiredness and want to see which med works better. I am not sure if I should take them together or not, I supposse I should ask the doctor.

yeah elavil helps with sleeping and the frequency at night for sure...and it helps painkillers work....
i never thought painkillers worked until i got on elavil....
it helped me right away and also i upped the dose and now sorta figuring out what dose is good for me now....
but yeah i found it helped tremendously with sleep and nocturia (frequency at night)
i don't take hydroxyzine since antihistamines make me nauseous and make my urethra hurt a lot....
i hope this helps ya

I have gradually increased up to 50 mg of Elavil with no problems - I also take Aterax at night - I do take both a few hours before I go to bed so that I am not too groggy in the mornings -

The Elavil has helped my nerve pain - and the combination of both has definately helped my nighttime waking etc.
