Is the odor something other people will smell? When I go to work, are people going to think I've been eating garlic?

blue,

You may not have the garlic oder.

Two years ago, I had DMSO treatment. I didn't have the oder. I asked my husband and he said he didn't smell anything. But I did find some garlic oder in my mouth after my 4th treatment. That was the only time i had the oder.

Good luck.

Hi Blue... Peiti is right, you may not get the odor. Some people don't. Some people get it, but it is gone in two hours. Some people smell icky for a day and a half! It is totally dependent on your metabolism, and therefore it's hard to predict. The only thing you can do is go for the instill and see how you react... and stock up on mints and gum just in case :)

I found the odor got less with each DMSO treatment I had. It would be really strong after the first 2 and then by the last one in the series (usually 6 or 8) it wouldn't be there at all. The DMSO is actually absorbed and excreted through the lungs - that is where the odor is coming from. Not really just your breath but as you breath...I could always smell it in my hair. My hubby and friends say it is not overwhelming and they wouldn't have noticed it if they hadn't have been expecting it every time. They say it makes them want to eat sea food!

When I was working, I scheduled my DMSO treatments for Friday so I would have the full weekend to get rid of the smell. My husband insists that I don't smell after my treatments, but if I can taste it, I think probably I do.

Hi Pam... I just read your post about smelling the DMSO smell in your hair!! I noticed that too... several days after my last DMSO, I was blow-drying my hair and kept getting whiffs of DMSO! :) I thought I was just paranoid...

The smell sucks, For me I think i am the fortunate one to retain the smell for a good two days. My dr makes me hold the DMSO in for two hours. Everyone at work says i stink when i go through these, it comes out of my pours, and my breath. I am getting used to being teased. Even my son and boyfriend say it stinks up the room that i am in and can not tolerate being around me.
Tomorrow i go for my sixth treatment. Thank god.

Everyone is different, let the people at work know you are going through med treatments and one of the side effects is a strong garlicky smell, Get a lot of minty gum to cover up the breath, and try to schedule your apts for fridays. Stay away from any activity that will make you sweat for the fact that the smell gets stronger(at least for me it did). Good luck, I guess it also determins how long you hold the medication in to be able to be absorbed by your body.

I'm like Tigger~that garlic smell would hang on for dear life for at least 2 days. By the time I was having the DMSO treatments I was already too sick to work so it didn't really matter much.

After one treatment one of my granddaughters was taken to the ER with a very high fever.....well, the second I found out I flew out the door and they had her is a little room, just big enough for a crib and a chair and the nurse kept looking at me funny and when she left I asked my daughter if I had a booger or something between my teeth, or WHAT cuz this nurse just kept acting funny. My daughter said "Mom, you stink". "Did you have a treatment today?" Boy did we get a laugh out of that one. Naturally the nurse had never heard of IC so there was not alot to talk about so I just said I was having treatments for a bladder disease and the order was something that some of us have to live with for a few days:D

I smell pretty bad for 2 days. DH comes home from work & says he should've stayed at work b/c the house stinks so bad. My 1st DMSO I stopped at my moms to drop her off & I couldn't hold it any longer b/c I had to go before I got out of the uro's office. I went straight to the bathroom & right out the door to leave. She told me at the next week's appt that her house still smelled bad even after spraying sprays & lighting candles. She said the laundry room stunk also & it is on the other side of the house & the door was shut. I hadn't even been near there. My husband took salad to work the next day & said when he opened the container it smelled like me & he about threw up & had to throw it out.
I have been told I smell like several diff things. DH says garlic, my sister said broccoli & my kids said shrimp. Put it all together & you get a nice meal lol
I had gone back to work the 9th, a day after treatment, & asked my sister if I still smelled & she said a little. So I warned everyone it was from my treatments b/c some had said they smelled me.
Everyone is either getting used to the smell or I'm not putting off such an odor anymore with treatments.
The 1st time I go to the bathroom after treatment I can smell it very strongly but I can't place what it smells like.

My husband says I only smell bad the evening that I have a treatment, and he only notices if he gets real close to me. He doesn't want to hug me for long on those evenings, but usually I feel bad enough that I don't care. I go straight home to bed on DMSO days.

Don't let the smell worry you, it may really make you feel better.

My husband is weird... he says he actually LIKES the smell of the DMSO treatments. Men can be very odd. He doesn't even care when I climb all over him to get in his lap because I want to be cuddled after the treatment. He says it smells like garlicky corn.

Oddly enough, our cat likes the smell too... every time I have a treatment, I come home and have a big glass of water. The cat is always really interested in the place on my glass where my icky DMSO-scented saliva is.

I have a weird household.

LOL :lmao:

Yeah my DH after my cysto/hydro said I smelled like old rotten corn, he couldn't quite figure out just what it smelled like. I forgot about that one until Jen mentioned it.
That is so funny about your husband & cat. My family would leave for a couple days every week if they could, lol

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the input. I took off that night for the first two weeks. Hopefully, by the next day, the smell is gone!!

The garlicky corn is pretty funny! Also, the cat! I love animals, and that made me laugh.
