Would like to hear from anyone who has both hypoglycemia & IC. What the heck are you supposed to eat?! I'm feeling very deprived. Having trouble controlling my sweet tooth. I have a husband & 4 kids (all picky eaters!). I hate to cook anymore. I wish I could just stop eating. Help!

I have hypoglycemia. What I have to do is to be certain I get an adequate amount of protein and very little sugar. Right now I'm on the Atkins diet and I haven't had low blood sugar shakes since I went on it.
I did clear with my doctor before starting on it and he approved. I do carry protein snacks, such as string cheese, with me at all times, but don't need them very often.

I have hypoglycemia, I can not tolerate any of the artificial sweetners, and I have a real sweet tooth. It's hard to keep it under control. I generally try to balance my sweet intake with protein, meat works the best for me. I limit myself to sweets, only after a meal in which I have consumed meat. Since I am already full from the meal, I don't usually eat as much sweets as I would normally if I were just snacking.
Right now I am on a malted milk ball kick. Hey, it's better than nothing.
I know what you mean about cooking. I use to love to cook, now I just cook the same few things, over and over for myself, and make something different for the fussy ones in my family. I feel like a short order cook.

I'm diabetic....I use the low carb approach and used it before it was "BIG". Lost about 80 pounds, now put 10 back on since of inactivity, but now starting to lose again. (Sigh)
anyway...balancing that, with the IC diets...really sucks. As much as possible use SPLENDA or STEVIA as your sweetner, but not the regular artificial sweetners. Bleh Nasty for the bladder..took me along time to figure that out......Anyway, I've had to add fiber to my diet more than I did before because of the Morphine...(you know...ahem) So Ihave a very special oatmeal my hubby makes (Regular oatmeal, Flax seed, almonds, frozen blueberries, milk, and a weeee bit of brown sugar:rolleyes: Can't have oatmeal without it) Helps keep the ol' pipes running clear. So high in fiber most of it doesn't count...the blueberries are negligible and good for you (IC) and ...well I won't discuss the brown sugar.
I might have a little cheese snack in the afternoon. Drink lots of H20....eggs, too. I'm never hungry for dinner or later anymore so I just don't eat after 3:00 ish. Hurts my tummy too much.

Thanks for your input, MakinIT. I have experimented w/ Splenda & Stevia a little bit, but don't really like the taste. Guess I'll have to play around w/ them some more. I'm still in the process of playing food detective. I've been in a flare for the last 4 days - I think b/c of some Chinese food I ate (although I've eaten at this place before & had the same food w/ no problem):( .
Giving up my iced tea (w/ lemon) habit isn't going so well. They say the caffeine is bad for both the blood sugar & the IC, but it doesn't seem to bother me so I really don't want to give it up. I am trying but it's so hard. I get tired of drinking just water.

Tea Lover:
I know what you mean....continue giving those other sweetners a try just to get used to them. The artificial ones (sweet n low, nutrasweet) are horrible for you, and not just your bladder. I gave them up when I started having horrible migraines about 2 years ago. Stevia and splenda are natural and I've found splenda to taste better, less of a bitter aftertaste, however with either, use only a little. You don't need much.
When I get absolutely desperate for something different, and my symptoms are ok, I may get a diet flavored water. (they have artificial sweetners, unfortunately) I also drink tea that is "no darker than my own pee.." ok so like chammolile, sometimes a little orange spice if I'm feeling exceptionally brave.
Good luck- Tracey

As far as artificial sweeyeners, try Spelnda. It is the best ,taste best too with no bad after taste. My mom is diabetic she also loves it and you can even cook with it.
It is all natural no saccharin.
Good Luck with your hypogylcemia diet.
BTW,Donna,
a friend of mine went on the atkins diet and lost 25 pounds and kept it off almost 2 yrs now.

Tracey,
I just noticed your post about splenda and Stevia?
What is Stevia?
I love splenda. For yrs I used to use sweet n low then Nutra sweet. They would give me migraines too.I think they might also contibute to bladder cancer.
Fruit 2 O water is so good.

Tealover, you need to find an alternative to iced tea with lemon. It's not necessarily the caffeine in the tea that's the problem --- tea is also very acid. And lemon is citrus, which most ICers don't handle well.
Have you tried any of the herbal teas? Some are very good. I know it's hard, but the end result can be well worth it.
Also --- I use Splenda for sweetening things.

well, it is a sugar substitute but is put under supplements due to intense lobbying on the sweetner industry. They didn't want anymore competition. (In Canada, you find it with the sweetners..) Anyway, Splenda has less of a bitter aftertaste. But I like the stevia for some stuff, I use both.
Thanks: Tracey
